"Who are you?" I asked nervously, trying to avoid looking into the boy's eyes.
"If you tell me your name, I might tell you mine." He replied, his voice even and cold.
"I-I'm Sayuri." I stuttered. Then added. "Please help me."

The boy regarded me. "Why should I do that?" He scoffed. "To me, you look weak, conceited and stupid."
"Hey!" I started defending myself, then faltered. He was partially right and, even though I wasn't very pleased with his description, I was in no position to argue.
"You're weak," He continued. "So another team managed to take your scroll and tie you up. I'm guessing you've just been running through the woods head-on, which is how somebody got the chance to ambush you, so you're conceited- you think you can pass this exam with effort alone? Or did you just have too much faith in your abilities? Part of being a ninja is being able to walk in the shadows. Did you think all the examiners were looking for was a good fighter? And the fact that you called for help, knowing you have no team-mates, proves that you're stupid as well. I may be from Konoha, but when you were wailing, anyone could have heard you. Are you aware that there aren't any rules against killing other competitors? If I wanted to, I could run my sword right through you."
My cheeks reddened in shame at the boy's words. He was right. I was weak, conceited and stupid. Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry, I chanted as I felt tears prick my eyes.

"So tell me," The boy continued. "Why should I help you?"
I blinked away tears and tried to concentrate. Think Sayuri, I told myself. Why should he help you? Why would he need your help? I took a closer look at him. There was a red and white crest in the shape of a fan on his clothes. I had seen it somewhere before... Then it clicked. The red eyes and the crest; they were both signs of the Uchiha clan of the Hidden Leaf Village. Kakashi had once told me of a young talent from that Clan...

"You're Itachi Uchiha?" It was more of a question than a statement, but the boy frowned and nodded.
"So you're not incompetent when you put your mind to it," Itachi said.
I tried to ignore his rude comment and continued to observe him. With a start I realised that he had a cut on his arm. So even though he's been acting like he's better than me he's also had some trouble, I thought. The cut didn't look too deep, but I was sure it was hurting him. It won't hinder him, but it will be an annoyance... Then my attention was drawn to two scroll-shaped lumps in his pocket. I took a deep breath. I was about to take a wager.

"Itachi Uchiha," I began, trying to make myself sound confidant. "You're not planning on killing me, are you?"
Itachi looked at me suspiciously, then said. "No."
"Then why did you come here?" I paused for a more dramatic effect. Itachi was now listening with greater interest. "If you didn't come here to kill me, you must have come to help me- I doubt you'd waste the precious time you have to collect two scrolls and get to the finish line by making fun of someone. You've got two scrolls already, but they're not two of each, are they? You've also got a cut on your arm. I think you had some difficulty getting a hold of that second scroll and now you're weary. You want to form a team but in such a hostile environment, it would normally be impossible to even talk to another competitor, let alone strike a deal with them.
"You wanted to know why you should free me? I'm sure you could pass this stage of the Chunin Exams by yourself, but I can help you. If we work together, this'll be faster and easier. I know you think I'm weak, conceited and stupid, but I'm good at following orders. I'm not useless. I also know how to do a bit of medical ninjutsu, so I can heal that cut on your arm."

Itachi considered for a moment with his eyes closed. As he opened his eyes to look at me again, they weren't red anymore but a very dark brown. Like this, he looked almost friendly. "So you say you can heal my cut?" He asked. "I suppose you'll be of some use then." He stepped towards me and started to cut the wire with his kunai knife. "Here's the deal: we form a team until both of us have the scrolls we need. Then we make our way to the center of the forest alone. Oh and a little tip: don't cross me." Itachi's stare was cold and direct.
"I wasn't planning on," I said nervously.
