The forest passed by me at a snail-like speed. I was taking my time on my way to see my pupil. It had been almost a month since I'd last seen Sayuri on her sixteenth birthday. Imagining the reprove I'd soon be seeing on her face made me cower, not in fear, but in shame. I knew I should have spent more time with her, but recently my life had gotten a lot busier.
I saw Sayuri's house before me and dropped onto the forest floor. The Hokage gave Sayuri enough money each month to take care of herself, so Sayuri had decided to expand her home with the money she received from her missions. Over the years, it had transformed from a one-room hut into a comfortable, 2 bedroom house. I knew that Sayuri had built the second bedroom especially for me so that I had a place to sleep whenever I visited. Thinking of her care and foresight made me feel even worse.
I knocked on the door and Sayuri opened it so suddenly, it nearly smacked me in the face. I supposed the only good thing about living alone in a forest with only 2 people aware of your existence was that you always knew who was at your door. As I expected, Sayuri was wearing an angry expression, but I knew her well enough to see the hurt in her eyes. I noticed she was also wearing a new outfit; a black leotard underneath a green bodice. On one side a long, light green sleeve and skirt appearing underneath the bodice. Her boots were a soft brown that went above the knees, almost reaching the grey, legging-shorts she was wearing underneath.
"Well look what the cat dragged in," Sayuri commented, glaring at me with narrowed eyes.
"I'm sorry I haven't been around for ages," I apologised, with a short, awkward laugh. "I was very busy."
"You were, were you?" Sayuri continued standing in the doorway. "What occupied so much of your time?"
"That's what I came to talk to you about." I waited a few minutes, but Sayuri wasn't planning on inviting me inside. "Can I come in?" I asked a little uncertainly.
"Oh, where are my manners!" Sayuri exclaimed sarcastically. "I think I might have forgotten them all since I hardly ever get to use them!"With that, she whirled around and stomped off into the living room, throwing herself onto a pillow violently. I followed. The door was pretty much in the middle of the wall and marked the border between the kitchen (to my left) and living room (to my right), which were both parts of the same room. This part of the house was most shabby- it was the original hut that Sayuri and I had built all those years ago.
"You're wearing the clothes I gave you for your birthday," I remarked, a little pleased.
Sayuri rolled her eyes. "My old ones were getting small and they were too childish. So what did you want to talk about?" She asked, her arms folded over her chest.
I sighed, unsure of what to say. "I've been assigned to take on some ninja pupils."Sayuri closed her eyes for a second, before opening one to look at me. She sighed, rubbing her face with her hands.
"So I suppose that means even less time that you can spend here. Well, don't let me stop you. Your little munchkins will probably eagerly await you. You can piss off now, it's not like I'll suffer from the lack of socialising or anything. I'll just, you know, train like I've been doing for the last 10 frikkin years." She sounded on the edge of tears and I was now regretting the way I had broken the news to her so casually. She took a deep breath and then stood up suddenly, walking towards the door. "May I show you the way out of my humble abode? While you're walking out I might boot you, so I know what it feels like to kick someone out on the curb. Goodbye sensei, or should I say ex-sensei. I don't have any intentions of speaking with you again, so don't come back." For a while, I was too shocked to say or do anything. "Get the f#ck out of my house, sensei." Sayuri growled.
I stood up slowly, dazed by her words and walked slowly towards the door. As I walked past her, I thought I saw tears in her eyes, but she turned before I had a second chance to see them. As I reached the doorway I halted. What was I doing? I turned, walked towards her and embraced her from behind. She stiffened, then tried wriggling out of my grip. "Sayuri please listen," I mumbled into her hair. "I'm not going to abandon you." At those words, Sayuri went limp. I turned her around and hugged her properly, stroking her back. Somehow she reminded me of a stray kitten.
