"Sasuke, are you sure you don't remember me?" I asked. Sasuke answered my question with a bewildered look. I sighed. "Well, I kind of expected that... so, where should I start? Do you want to hear my life story, or just a few things about me?"
"I wanna know everything!" Naruto said eagerly, his blue eyes sparkling. I grinned at him ruefully. "Well, don't blame me if it gets boring..."I lived in a small village, somewhere along the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Rain*. Due to some..." I cleared my throat. "Unfortunate circumstances, I was forced to leave my home and found my way far into the Land of Fire.
"I was alone, without anything to eat or anywhere to stay. It was Autumn, and my chances of surviving the winter were slim. Luckily, Kakashi found me only a few days after I left my home and looked after me. After I found out that he was a ninja, I asked him to train me. Kakashi agreed and has been training me to become a ninja for the past 10 years, during which I went on many missions with him and the ANBU.
" Over all this time, I was kept a secret from the village and only Kakashi and the Hokage knew about me."I leaned back on the couch and crossed my arms. I had finished my story. Everyone continued looking at me expectantly. "Oh and then I met all of you guys today," I added. Naruto looked to his friends uncertainly at this final note.
"Is... that it?" He asked, his head tilted to the side.
"Yes. I guess backstory time didn't end up being as long as we all expected it to be. But man, it's kind of sad that my life story just got summed up in one paragraph.""Why were you kept a secret?" Naruto piped up after a minute of thought.
"That's a good question, kid," I said. "It's got something to do with my safety." Only after having said it, did I realise how vague the explanation was. I turned to Kakashi for help, but he was avoiding eye contact.
"Umm yeah..." Kakashi mumbled. He sounded sheepish. "For your safety."
I was a little taken aback by Kakashi's behaviour. He wasn't usually so... suspicious. Never mind, I shrugged. I'll ask him about it later.
"But I won't be a secret for much longer!" I announced, turning back to the group with an excited smile on my face. "Kakashi said I could move into the village now!"
"Really?" Naruto exclaimed, his eyes sparkling. "That means we can hang out some more!" I felt my heart jump and I couldn't stop a grin from spreading on my face. Why did this little kid make me so happy?
"Speaking of..." Kakashi interjected. "The Hokage agreed to my request- he's already found you an apartment in the village." Almost before I could manage to express my joy, Naruto let out a triumphant shout."Then it's settled, right?" He asked. "We'll have another member in team 7!"
"I don't know about that," I chuckled. "I've already graduated from the ninja academy."
Naruto's face fell. "But you'll be joining us on some missions at least, right?"
I glanced at Kakashi and he shrugged. "We'll see," I said. For some time, we continued talking. When the sun started slipping behind the tree tops, Kakashi rose. "I think we should stop intruding on Sayuri's hospitality," He said. Then, in response to Naruto's dejected look: "I'm sure she'll visit you when she moves into the village, but it's getting late." I was amused to note that Naruto seemed to be the only one sad to leave. Sakura and Sasuke still seemed to be suspicious of me. Maybe I acted a little too rudely towards them... I chided myself. At first I had planned to treat all three of Kakashi's students coldly, but Naruto's mischief and good will had taken me by surprise. I had been rather obviously playing favourites.
I waved to my guests as they left through the door. Once they were out of sight, I returned to the living room. I removed the ANBU mask I had been wearing from my face and breathed a sigh of relief- it was good to finally feel some air on my face again. I stood for a while with my hands on my hips, considering what to do next. I heard my stomach growl and realised I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. Damn, adventure makes me hungry. I cleared all vegetable remains from my fridge, cut them and put them into a pot of water. A soup was just what I needed. While the water slowly started to boil, I walked into my bedroom and changed into my pyjama. I sat on my bed for a while and brushed my hair. Then I walked back into the kitchen. The soup was by now bubbling happily. I stabbed at some of the vegetables with a fork. As I expected, they were not soft yet. I sighed and turned to the sofa.
