Bellow me, Sayuri and Sakura were facing each other. The former looked at her opponent, unimpressed. The latter had a frown on her face. It seemed I had underestimated Sakura's dislike for Sayuri- usually, Sakura was very careful whenever I set Team 7 strange tasks like these. She'd hide and watch Naruto, who always charged into every exercise without thinking, before making any moves herself. Although her plan of action was better than Naruto's, she often lacked drive. She tried to look for an opening but if she didn't find one, she wouldn't really try. Today, however, Sakura seemed to have confronted Sayuri herself. Maybe this development will be beneficial to her, I thought.

"Aren't you going to attack?" Sayuri asked. I could tell she was trying to make herself sound neutral, an effort I appreciated. Nevertheless, Sakura seemed to take the older girl's words as an insult.
"Of course I will!" She exclaimed, throwing a shuriken. It was well aimed, but it wasn't hard to dodge. Sakura threw another shuriken but, like the first, it didn't even get close to hitting Sayuri, who dodged it with ease.
"Try throwing a few at once," Sayuri suggested. I sighed. There was no malicious intent behind her words but Sakura bristled at them.
"I don't need help from you!" She hissed. She threw some more shuriken, to no avail. "If this were proper combat, you wouldn't have such an easy time dodging my punches." At this remark, I groaned. Sayuri had been doing so well, but I knew that she wouldn't be able to continue acting neutral after such a provocation.
"Hah, don't make me laugh!" Sayuri sneered, starting to stalk towards her opponent. "You know that monstrous strength of yours won't help you if you can't land a single hit." Before, Sayuri had been standing up straight with her hands at her sides, full of openings, the way I usually faced my students when we were training. Her stance changed smoothly and quickly. Suddenly, her weight was perfectly balanced, her footing strong, her muscles taught but seemingly liquid. She looked perfectly relaxed but ready to strike, like a cat waiting to pounce. "So I'll change the rules for you a little: if you land any sort of attack on me, you win. Come at me with your full strength."
Although Sakura still looked angry, she became a little uncertain now. "Are you underestimating me?" She asked doubtfully. "You know it would be dangerous for me to use my full strength. If I hit you in a sensitive spot, I could accidentally kill you."
"I think the problem here is that you're overestimating yourself," Sayuri retorted. "Something like that won't kill me."
"Fine, you asked for it!" Sakura raised her voice angrily. She clenched her fists, and charged at her opponent.

While I watched the fighting, I felt slightly concerned. I hadn't really planned on making my students directly spar with each other, especially not when there was bad blood between them. I knew that Sayuri wouldn't harm Sakura, but whether the same was true vice versa, I wasn't too sure. It wasn't their character or attitudes that led me to these assumptions, but their skills and experience. Sayuri was older and had been on many missions: she knew exactly what she was capable of, but more importantly, she knew how to hold back. For Sakura, who had considerably less training, mistakes weren't out of the question. She wasn't aiming to kill, but this set-up was an accident waiting to happen. The reasonable part of me knew that the right thing to do would be to step in. But the impulsive part which wasn't considering consequences, was only thinking about how much I loved to see Sayuri fight. Every one of her movements looked choreographed, as though she had rehearsed and performed this specific dance for years. Next to her, Sakura looked graceless and slow. Her punches were only hitting air, she was spinning in circles, trying to keep up with Sayuri who was flitting around the clearing, as light as a feather.

I could tell that Sakura was getting progressively more frustrated with each punch that missed her opponent. Hopelessly outmatched and unable to leave a scratch on Sayuri, her building up anger wasn't helping her focus. Sayuri seemed to realise that, from here on out, Sakura's attacks would only get more clumsy and impulsive. Now that I thought about it, her direct, artless assault was very similar to how Naruto fought. As Sayuri side stepped one of Sakura's fists, she tripped the younger girl up, making her fall to the ground face down. Before Sakura even had a chance to rise, Sayuri dropped her weight onto the younger girl's back, placing her feet on top of each of her upper arms, pinning them to the floor.
