Chapter 14: 'You are going to be the best grandmother Ali. I am 100% sure.'

After the party at the Whyte Wyrm I slept at home. I did not want to leave my pregnant daughter alone, especially not at night. I know what it's like for Polly to be pregnant at that age.

I woke up, walked to the bathroom and noticed my makeup was smudged all over my face. Oops. When FP kissed me last night it got me so excited that we ran out of the bar, outside. The rain caused my makeup to smudge and of course our making out sesh contributed to my now panda-face. I took some makeup wipes and removed the leftovers from my face. I put on some clothes and as I was brushing my teeth I heard a scream.
'OH MY GOD.'
I ran down the stairs and as I arrived in the livingroom I noticed Polly's water had broken. I put my hand on my daughter's back and said: 'Okay, Betty, you get Polly's bag from her room. I'll get the car ready. Pol, I'll take your purse and mine. Let's go.'
I helped Polly in the car and Betty came running down the stairs.
'Here mom, Polly, do you need anything else?' She said as she handed me the hospitalbag.
'Honey, please, you have to go to school.' I said.
'No mom, I want to be there!'
'I know but this could take a little while.' I whispered to my youngest daughter.
'I know mom, you don't have to whisper. Damn it, a contraction.' She was hissing from the pain. I felt bad for her.
'I want Betty with me, mom. Please?'
How could I deny my daughter in labor anything? I couldn't.
'Alright. Hop in then.' I said as Betty quickly buckled her seatbelt.
'We'll be at the hospital in 10.'
Polly's contractions kept coming every few minutes now. I pulled into the parkinglot of the emergency room. As we got out of the car a nurse came to us with a wheelchair. Polly sat down as Betty and I grabbed our bags and followed the nurse inside.
'Do you know how far apart your contractions have been coming?' She asked.
'Uhm I didn't time it but every few minutes.' Polly said.
'Alright, we'll get you a room and do a check up to see how far you are.'
'That's great. Thank you.' I answered for Polly.
'Mom, you go with her. I'm gonna call dad, he has the right to know, right?'
'Yes he does. You can let him know. I'll go with Polly and text you the room we're in.'
And so I left Betty in the lobby of the hospital. Hal and I still aren't on good terms or whatever but he has the right to know and I'll deal with him for Polly and the twins. After all, he's becoming a grandfather and in a few hours I'll be a grandmother. As the nurses installed Polly in her room I decided to quickly text FP. I wanted him to know.
'Polly's having the twins. X'
I immediately got a response.
'Congratulations, now you're almost a grandmother! X'
'I know... It's such a weird feeling, but I'm going to be a hip grandmother! X'
'Sure are! X'
I went back into the room to help Polly.
'How do you feel? Excited to be a mom?' I stroked her arm as she laid in the bed.
'Yeah, but I wish Jason were here.'
'Of course you do. I get that. Today you gotta push through, for the babies and for Jason. I bet he wants you to be a happy mother.'
'I know. Thanks mom, for being there for me.' She shyly smiled.
'I'll always be here honey. Do you need some ice chips?'
Betty joined us and took the job from me. 'I'll get her some.'
'So.. mom, weren't you afraid the first time you had a child? Because I'm terrified.' I saw it in her eyes.
'Honestly, yes I was, but it all turned out alright. I know what it's like to have a baby at your age Pols, but you shouldn't be afraid. As I said, I will always be here for you. Whatever you need.'
'I really appreciate that.'
I heard a knock on the door and saw Hal peaking through the door together with Betty.
'Can I come in?' He asked politely. Polly looked at me and I nodded.
'Sure.' Polly said.
'Great, thanks.' He smiled. 'How are you Pols, how do you feel?'
'In pain, but still barable.' She sighed.
'Just know that I will support you, Polly. This has nothing to do with me and your mom.'
'That is right. Things aren't amazing between us but we'll both be here for you, separately.'
'That's nice of the both of you.' Polly said.
'Now I bet you'd rather share this with your mom so I'll be out in the hallway if you need me.'
'Thanks Hal.' I said. Part of me still hates him for the things that he has done but today we are putting that aside. Betty and I stayed with Polly to support her through her contractions and when the nurse came in she said Polly was now ready to give birth.
'You're now 10 centimetres. You can start to push Polly.'
Through Polly's screams of pain I held her hand and Betty held her other hand. We both knew she'd rather have Jason by her side but we tried to support her anyways.
'Alright, this is the final push for baby number one!' The nurse said.
'Oh my gosh here she is.' I couldn't contain my tears and let one roll down my cheek.
Not too much later Polly gave birth to my second grandchild. It was a boy.
'Now you have one of each!' Betty said, also having a tear escape her eye.
'I love them already.' Polly said as she held the girl in her arms, I kept a tight grip on the beautiful baby boy.
'Can I get dad, I bet he's dying out there.' Betty asked.
'Of course.' Polly said and again I nodded.
Hal came into the room and stood next to Polly's bed in awe. 'They are beautiful. May I hold one?' Polly nodded and I handed him the boy.
'I'm going to grab some coffee. Can I bring you guys anything?' I asked. They all said no.
I closed the door of Polly's room behind me and walked through the corridors feeling oddly satisfied. I dialed FP's number and he quickly answered.
'Forsythe, I am a grandmother.' I whispered as I sat down on a chair.
'Congratulations Alice. I am truly happy for you. Twins, right?'
'Yes.' I sobbed.
'Oh are you alright?' He noticed something was off.
'Yes, this just made me think of our son.'
'I know. It must've been pretty hard for you.'
'It was but I'm happy I can be here for Polly.'
'I bet. You are going to be the best grandmother Ali. I am 100% sure.'
We both hung up and in this moment I truly realized what a great man FP is. If he and I were together during the birth of our son I bet he would have been the best father to our son.
