S E V E N T E E N - The Aftermath
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Sighing, Jasmine straightened herself in front of classroom C23, tightening her sweaty grip on her textbooks. The door was open by a crack, emitting muffled giggling, chortling, and a mix of high and low pitched voices.
First period was maths with Mr Zhou, or rather...a competition to see who asked the most pointless and racist questions in the world. Elaine would be there, and so would Annica, whom Jasmine failed to make a positive acquaintance with at the party. But neither of the two concerned Jasmine as greatly as meeting Heath Parker.
Long story short, Jasmine Winters had practically sweated balls walking from the bus stop to school, her stomach constantly lurching and heart accelerating at a dangerous speed. No, the weather wasn't hot in the least bit. Rather, Summer was coming to an end and Autumn was racing to fill its place, quickly switching the searing heat to a cooler one.
So why on earth was she all nervous, hot and sticky?
Jasmine unzipped her baby-blue hoodie and pinching the T-shirt underneath, shook it to let in some cool air. It helped...only a little. Her heart was still hammering in her chest and she felt as though swords were prodding her tummy, threatening to lurch violently and send some unpleasant liquids up her Oesophagus.
Careful not to touch the door, she leaned forward and peered into the crack.
A skinny, red-haired boy had occupied her usual seat at the front, and a group of Asian girls already had their books sprawled out in front of them on every other desk that she could see. Of course, farther towards the back of the classroom, there had to be more. But Jasmine would've jumped off a fifty-metre cliff rather than taken an empty seat at the back with none other than the kids who only attended school to sleep, or the kids who were only present to talk. A.K.A, the popular freaks...including the super hot Heath Parker who most probably was the cause of Jasmine Winter's chaotic heartb-stop it!
Swallowing a lungful of breath, she pushed the door open with an eerie creak and stepped in, her heart picking up speed as the class fell deathly silent at her entrance.
'Don't look up! Don't look up!'
Jasmine gulped and kept her head down, shuffling to an empty seat near the wall. She could feel every eye in the classroom burning holes into her head, following her every movement and examining her from head to toe.
Then when she had taken her seat, a snicker sounded from the corner of the classroom.
"That Jasmine." Hushed whispers spread through the classroom like wildfire and Jasmine tried to ignore them as best as she could, not caring if they were whispers of worship or of disdain.
"Psst, Jasmine." A sharp tap on her shoulder made Jasmine jump and whip her head around. "They were talking about you the whole time." A girl, whom Jasmine recognised as Ella Abdi from the Science team, was leaning over her table. She tugged on her hijab to cover an inch of her face as if it would offer protection from nosy ears.
"Who do you mean by 'they'?"
Ella nodded towards the back row. "Them."
But of course, Jasmine didn't dare to look in the direction. She knew all too well what group sat in the back row. "Did you catch what they were talking about?"
"Something about wasting something," Ella bit her lip thoughtfully. "And you at Annica's party?"
Oh, hell's whiskers. This was bad. Really bad.
Jasmine cleared her throat and shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "And?"
"I don't know. They were all talking about different things, actually."
