T W E N T Y T H R E E - Bitches produce bitchy words

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The two families stared at each other for a long time.

Not one word was spoken.

Then with one slashing movement of his head, Mr Parker lifted his chin. He regarded Mr Ho with cold, frostbitten eyes before marching away from the scene. His wife followed, after having swept Patricia's family with one menacing look.

Jasmine shivered as the woman's eyes met hers. She was a slim lady with a pale face, short, blond hair combed back in a stylish manner, and eyes as deep as the ocean. Those eyes narrowed infinitesimally as Jasmine slowly hung her head as if saying 'don't look at me...pass, please.'
And as if she understood, Mrs Parker glided away, her golden dress glittering like a thousand candlelights under the chandelier.

"God damn those haughty souls!" Mr Ho muttered. "God damn them all!"

"Stay calm, Martin. We're in a room full of people."

Jasmine and Patricia followed the couple outside the building and did not open their mouths one single inch. The night air was warm; a coat for those in sleeveless dresses. A distinct stench of cigarette smoke and expensive perfume clung to the air like a blood-sucking leech.

It was then that a sweet, sickly voice filled with familiarity captured Jasmine's attention.

"Yes, I've just arrived. No, no... I don't see him anywhere. Is he on his way?" Then after a brief moment of silence. "He what?!"

The owner of the voice emerged from between two parked cars. Elaine Dora Santiago stepped onto the curb with a phone to her ear, dressed like a model about to hit the red carpet. She had on a short, rosy pink dress which bunched around her perfect thighs, and a pair of large, diamond earrings glittered prodigiously underneath her wavy chestnut-coloured hair.

Elaine let out a heavy sigh. "How long will it take to find him?... What do you mean you don't know?" She looked around anxiously. "He's not at his friend's place? Did you try calling him? -Isn't picking up?"

Jasmine shuffled silently across the stone pavement, carefully averting her eyes from Elaine to Patricia's family. The idea of 'making eye-contact with the Queen Bee' terrified her gutless.

"Fine, fine," Elaine let out a heavy sigh of frustration. "I'll just go in by myself - oh hi Jasmine!"

Jasmine froze and cursed under her breath. "Wow, what a coincidence!" Elaine beamed, tossing her wavy locks over her shoulder. "Were you just finishing dinner? Pity you can't stay longer... or can you? And....you must've come with Patricia!"

At that moment, Patricia hurriedly stepped around the corner of a building, her jaw tightly clenched together. It was only when she saw Elaine that they dropped open in surprise.

"I'm guessing it was a family dinner?" Elaine stepped closer, her smile widening by a fraction of an inch. "I was just meeting Heath's parents tonight. You know, for corporate business and all...but I do wish to make an acquaintance with them." She looked towards the restaurant. "It's a nice place to meet; very romantic... with all the pretty chandeliers and candles-"

Jasmine nodded, glancing towards the restaurant. Yes, it was indeed romantic with all the pretty chandeliers and candles....now was she allowed to casually slip away from the scene?

"Heath is on his way. It might be cool if you could stay for a while to meet him but oh, I think Patricia's waiting for you. Unfortunate, really." Elaine's glossy pink lips stretched into a sweet, mischievous smile. She glanced at Patricia, who had gathered herself from the surprise and was marching their way. "Well it was absolutely wonderful meeting you tonight, Jasmine," Elaine slowly inched away as Patricia walked closer. "I hope to see you around sometime soon-"
