Am I hearing their heartbeats?

Questions started flooding into my brain. No, this can't be true, what am I even thinking? I must be hearing stuff. I shook the thought off and continued walking.

The day passed slowly, I was really irritated and frustrated by the noise. No matter what I do, I can't shut them out.

"Hey, you alright? You don't look so well..." a familiar voice said, placed her hand on my shoulder. I turned around and shot her a glare, but then noticed it was Sam.

"Oh it's just you..." I mumbled. She smiled kindly and set her food tray next mine. The cafeteria was crowded with people. And I hated it. The noise is getting louder and louder. "You haven't started eating yet, you alright?" she asked again, this time I could see concern and worried in her eyes.

"Um...yeah" I lied, I didn't had the mood to explain it. All I want now is to be left alone. I stuffed my food my mouth as I knew she was going to ask me questions. She shook her head and started to eat.

"I think I need to go to the toilet," I said as I swallowed the large amount of food I had stuff in my mouth and rushed out of the cafeteria, to the toilet.

I took a step closer to the mirror, staring at my reflection in disbelief. The person looking back at me was still me, but at the same time it wasn't. I had the same long, jet-black hair that I tied into a ponytail. The same hazel eyes. The same olive skin.

But my hazel eyes appeared somehow wider and the colour brighter as if it was glowing.

I twist the tap open, water came flowing down. I quickly gate some water with both of my hands and splashed them on my face. I did it over and over, looked back in the mirror. The girl with glowing eyes was still standing there, looking back at me.

I decided to skip the rest of the day and just go home. It didn't matter anyways since
I had a few more classes left.
I wanted to ask Sam for a lift home but changed my mind.

Sam would make me explain and I didn't wanted to face her, she would only be satisfied with the truth. Also, I wanted to get away from all the noises. And Sam was one of them.

The noise only happens when I'm near someone, but it isn't possible to hear heartbeats in such a distance. Wait a minute. Was I becoming a mythical creature like a werewolf or a vampire? I kicked the can on the floor.

Without putting much strength, the can flew a few blocks away. Wait. What. I rubbed eyes to check if my eyes werent paying tricks on me. How did that can flew that far?!

I ran towards the can and on full-speed and didn't know how to stop. I jumped over the can and realised how light my body felt, not only that, I could jump further and higher too. I was freaked out by discovering this side of myself that I didn't know I even had.

Was I evolving into a much more better and stronger person? How long did I had these abilities?

The realisation that I had arrived home had interrupted my self questioning. I also noticed that I was not the least bit of breathless even though I have been running and jumping the whole way. To be honest, having a better stamina is pretty cool.

                        •••

Two weeks passed and the nightmares continued. I had been soaked in sweat many times, but I got used to it, so did the noises. I had learn to control what I hear.

"So you're not sick anymore, right?" Sam asked. I explained her the next day that I felt sick, my head hurts and felt like throwing up. I had to make an excuse and couldn't let her know the truth. "Yeah, I'm fine, why?" I replied to her question.

Thump, thump, thump

Oh, did I mentioned that I can still hear the thumping, but I can control when I want to hear them. I think the noises are heartbeats. That's what I suspect. But the only thing that I couldn't shake off is that someone is still watching me. After so long, I can feel the pair of eyes boring into me.

"No, just wondering. Have you seen the news?" she asked again as she scrolled through her phone. Sam was always up to date with the latest news and never missed one.

"What news?"

"A killer cat is one the loose."

"A killer cat?"

"Yeah, something like a serial killer."

"Keep going... "

"They call her the Cheshire Cat"
