Why bother?

In the residence of the Swans, Gabriela Swan sat on her bed as she read through the various mythology books she scattered around herself.

"Gold-coloured eyes, pale skins and an abnormally weird lack of appetite..." Gabby muttered as she continued to scan through her numerous books. "Not much to go from that... whatever could they be Vampires? Werewolves?"

Turning towards her phone, she stared at the digital box that told her that it was time to go to school, sighing, Gabby turned and took her book bag and slid her feet into her boots. With one look in the mirror, she was out the door and down the stairs where she met her sister's back.

"Woah, I never knew our floorboards were Brazilian Cherry! We really need to keep this place in shape..."

"Seriously?" Bella asked shocked. "I thought it was because dad was too busy to organise..."

"Nope, it's always been like this, anyways, ready to go?"

"Huh, oh yeah."

As Bella opened the door, her face quickly dropped into a frown.

Ice puddles.

Everywhere.

"Great," she muttered glancing at her younger sister as she observed the numerous icy plashes on the driveway.

"Oh, come on Bella-love, it's not that bad," Gabby says reassuring her sister as she ushered her down the steps. But before she could answer, she slipped and fell straight on her butt.

Bella felt her eyes tear up at the impact as she looked up at the older Swan, watching as Gabby stifled and held back her giggles, Bella's frown deepened as few tears spilled from the corner of her eyes.

"Don't laugh!" Bella exclaimed, her voice wavering through the pain.

"I-I'm not... promise—pfft." Gabby spluttered as she failed to contain her laughter. The sound of the truck pulling up at the driveway caught the twins' attention as their father raced out to help Bella up.

"You okay, Bells?" Charlie asks, his frown etched in worry but Gabby could swear it was twitching, struggling to keep in the smile.

"Ice doesn't help the uncoordinated," She said before glaring at the girl behind her, "and neither do people named Gabriela."

With one look, Gabby fell into laughter as she doubled over.

"Bella, hunny, I didn't mean to laugh." She said her face pulling into a pout as she raced down the steps—carefully than Bella—to embrace the teary girl.

"That's why I got you new tires," Charlie said, his hands gesturing to the new tires on the truck, "also, I might be late to dinner tonight. I'm heading down to Mason County. A security guard at the Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal." He said, giving the girls kisses on the forehead.

"An animal?" The two asks, their faces morphing into confusion.

"You're not in Phoenix anymore honey. They've been hunting it for a week with no luck. Thought I'd lend a hand."

"Okay, be careful," Bella says, an awkward smile on her face, before carefully trudging through the icy pavement.

"Always am."

"Bye, Daddy. Be careful..."

"Will do, sweetheart."

As Gabby got in the truck, Bella stuck her head out as she thanked their father, before she reversed and made their way to school. It was a quiet drive, mostly just Bella and Gabby humming or singing softly with the tune. The soft hum of the radio hosts and songs filling the truck as the two parked and left for class.
