When Saturday morning graced the Swan household, Gabby was the first riser as she started packing her bags.
"To think you hated the sun."
Gabby softly smiled as she turned around, meeting the golden-hued eyes of Jasper Hale.
"Good morning to you too, Mr Hale."
Jasper smiled as he walked over to her, raising her hand to his lips. Cold meeting warm. Gabby flinched as she placed her hand on his cheek, and he leaned into her warmth.
"You're leaving. When?"
"Next Wednesday," She answers, turning back to her suitcase.
"Any reason why?"
"Homesickness," Gabby answers curtly with a sniff as her eyes waver, slightly wet.
Jasper nods, knowing she doesn't want to talk about it, and Gabby is thankful for that. Jasper knows her tells, knew her inside out, despite only knowing each other for three months.
"Your sister is being introduced to the family tonight."
"Really?" Gabby asks, her head snapping to the vampire who watched her pack her shirts into her suitcase.
"She and Edward went public yesterday, so now it's time to meet the family."
"Isn't it too fast? I mean, they just got to know each other properly."
"Says you. We weren't even going out, and you met the family," Jasper playfully chided.
"My situation was different!" Gabby insists, folding her black shirt. "Besides, it wasn't like I had a choice."
"That's true."
Jasper sat on her bed, his hands tracing the embroidered name on her blanket.
Ella Mae
"Ella Mae?" Jasper asks with a raised eyebrow, his fingers still tracing the cursive.
"My grandmother. She refused to call me Gabriela, claimed that it was far too religious," Gabby smiles, her eyes straying to the blanket. "So, she settled for Ella Mae. It apparently gave off fairy vibes. It just stuck, I guess."
"Well, Miss Fairy, would you mind accompanying me to your sister's debut?" Jasper jokes as he looks up at her. Gabby smiles and folds the last of her shirts as she nods.
"It would be an honour, good Sir."
Bella sat on her bed and stared at the mirror. Across the hall from her bedroom, there's a girl. Who shares the exact same face as her. And she thought she knew everything about that girl. Yet here they are as they sat on two different sides.
She didn't understand. It was always Gabby that wanted out of Arizona. It was always Gabriela who needed Forks. It was always her. So, what happened? What changed?
Bella moved to lie on her bed. She had about two hours before she was introduced to the Cullens officially. Two hours to mull over her sister's sudden personality change. It started a month ago.
It was a small thing at first. The sudden need to go to the beach all the time, the excitement held when the sun came out. Her everyday wardrobe became more summery, and she reminisced about going on road trips again. Gabby tolerated the road trips. She enjoyed them to an extent but never felt the craze her sister and mother had.
But she was here, sitting on the grass, soaking up the sun. She talked about the states and places they had yet to visit and the chance to feel the wind and sun again. It would have sounded like she was just ready for the school holidays, but Bella knew her sister. She wasn't the 'pack your bags and get into the bush' type. Gabby was the bookworm, the homebody. The sort of girl that shopped till she dropped. She didn't dedicate herself to travels that made her sweaty or trips that restricted her to one shower a week. She was the girl that enjoyed showers and bubble baths, to the point that she would freak out if she missed showering, even just for a day.
