Mitch’s POV

I stared at my texting history with Scott. I hadn’t texted him in two whole weeks. My parents had been bringing me to school, so the only time I ever saw him was when we all met in the morning then at lunch, and then Kirstie would bring me home after school. I hadn’t gotten any alone time with him and it sucked.

He’d been acting different around me, too. He was distant and didn’t really talk about things with me anymore. The last online conversation we had was short and he’d signed off before we really started talking about anything solid. I missed his cologne and his smile. I missed his room. I missed his car. I missed him so badly, and I finally mustered up the confidence to text him.

Mitch: Hey stranger!

I rolled my eyes at the cliché opening, but there it was already sent. I sat on the fence in the back of my house that led to the woody opening that I really wasn’t supposed to cross over into. I spun my phone around in my hand waiting for it to buzz. The anticipation was killing me, but he wasn’t answering. I wasn’t sure if he was going to. I went over everything that had happened recently and I couldn’t figure out why he would suddenly stop talking to me.

Maybe he started dating someone.

“Yeah, right.” I said aloud and then immediately stopped spinning the phone. Had I just answered the stupid voice out loud? “Oh my god.” I jumped down from the fence and started walking, turning down my street.

I walked for a while and finally felt my phone buzz. I stopped dead in my tracks and saw he had answered.

Scott: Hey there, bestie J

I started jumping with joy at that point. Not only had he answered me, but he called me his bestie! Things were okay!

Mitch: I miss you! Where’ve you been?

Scott: Sick :[

I recalled he was absent on Friday, and now it was Sunday, but that didn’t account for all the other days he was gone.

Mitch: Oh :[ want me to let you be?

Scott: No I’m dying over here x.x I need someone to talk to lol

Mitch: What’s wrong??? Want me to bring you something?

Scott: Pneumonia L  I think I’m okay <3 if you want to come visit you can, just stay like, 10 feet away from me lol

I took that as an invitation and started walking – well, sprinting – to Scott’s house. By the time I got there, I was kind of out of breath, but I was excited as ever.

I opened his door and he was leaned over a trashcan on his bed. He coughed heavily and hard. He spit into the trashcan and I shut the door, causing him to look up. Tears were streamed down his face and he jumped when he saw me. “Hey…” He choked out, reaching for a tissue and wiping his face off.

My eyes started filling up with tears at the sight. “Oh my god, are you okay?” I asked, examining him with my eyes. His face was pale and tired.
