Scott’s POV

Keith was back.

I saw him walk by the diner as Kirstie and I ate lunch. I felt my stomach turn at the sight, like I had seen a ghost.

“Scott?” Kirstie snapped in my face. “Prom, yes or no?”

“What? Oh. Yeah. I’d love to be your date.” I said, taking another glance at the window, but he was gone.

“Yay!” She clapped her hands together and went back to her food. “We can wear red! We’ll look so good!”

I smiled and nodded at her until she looked down from me. I pulled out my phone. I felt like I should warn Mitch, but it was October 1st. He knew what today meant. It meant Keith was back in Arlington on parole and Mitch was free game again.

I hesitated to text him, but I had to.

Scott: Hey, just saw Keith roaming around. Please be careful if you’re out.

Kirstie and I finished our lunch and then started to head back to my house. Halfway there, Kirstie pulled out her phone and gasped.

“Scott we need to go to Mitch’s house.” She said.

“What? W-“

“NOW!” She yelled and pointed to the steering wheel. I immediately turned around and started speeding towards his house.

“What happened?” I asked, scared.

“Keith’s friends are outside of his house…I told him to call the police but he won’t listen to me!”

My lip quivered. Mitch was in trouble and I knew he would never involve anyone that would tell his parents. What if they had broken into the house already? What if they hurt him?!

“FUCK!” I slammed on the brakes as we hit a red light. I looked both ways and realized no one was coming, so I stepped on the gas and sped down the open road that led to his house.

“Scott, calm down a little!” Kirstie was grabbing the handle above the window with her hand tightly. I slowed as I came to Mitch’s street and stopped the car suddenly in front of his house. I didn’t see anyone hanging around, so I jumped up and went around the car to get Kirstie out.

“Come on, we’re checking inside and if they’re not in there you’re staying with him, okay?” I said. I was sick of shit happening to Mitch. I had to take care of these assholes once and for all.

“Okay…” Kirstie said nervously as she followed me into the house.

“MITCH!” I yelled out when I got inside, looking around the house for anything suspicious. Mitch came running down the stairs and looked relieved when he saw us.

“Thank god!” He said before Kirstie wrapped her arms around him.

“Where are they?” I asked.

“They were in the backyard…then they ran to the front and they were throwing things at my window…I think they went in the backyard again but I don’t know…” He shuddered in panic and I swallowed hard. I stepped towards him and wrapped my arm around him.

“I’ll get them, don’t worry.” I said.

“Be careful…” Mitch said as I started out the door.

There wasn’t anyone in the backyard when I got out there. I rounded the broken fence in his backyard to a wooded area and heard people talking. I walked deeper in as quietly as I could before I made out Blake and Joey’s voices. Eventually, I saw them in the distance smoking cigarettes. I ducked behind a tree to listen to them.
