The Camp Half-Blood dance was in a week and a half, and I still didn't have the courage to ask Annabeth. There's been some moments, when I go up to her, about to ask her, but then I just panic and walk away. Oh, and Thalia is not helping at all. Every time the three of us are together, she says things like, "Annabeth, who are you going to the dance with?", and "You still haven't asked anyone, Percy?" Gods, it was annoying. Once, I even had to kick her in the shins so she would shut up.
I guess that Annabeth noticed her friend's weird behaviour as well, because I overheard them talking one day.
"Why do you keep talking about the dance?" Annabeth had asked.
"Because," Thalia replied, "I wanna know who you're going with. You know, so I... So I can give my approval."
"Your approval?"
"Yeah. You know, to see if the guy's acceptable for you."
"So which guys would I be allowed to go with?" Annabeth asked.
Thalia shrugged and listed off a few names. "Scott, Tyler, Dylan, Grant, I don't know, Percy..."
I had almost choked on the air.
I am going to kill her, I had thought.
I glanced over my shoulder to see what Annabeth would say to that But, she just shrugged and said something that I couldn't hear.
"I am going to kill you," I said to Thalia, a few days later.
"Why?" she asked innocently.
"Why?!" I said, trying hard to keep my voice low. "You practically told Annabeth that I wanted to go to the dance with her!"
"Wait, so you do?"
"Maybe. No. You're just making it seem like I do."
Thalia smiled and shrugged. "Hey, I didn't do anything. I was just saying who I didn't mind her going to the dance with. And you just happen to be one of those people."
I glared at her, but she continued to smile. "Smile, Seaweed Brain. You look like you wanna kill someone."
"Hey," I said, pointing my finger at her. "You're not allowed to call me Seaweed Brain."
"Annabeth calls you Seaweed Brain."
"Exactly."
Thalia rolled her eyes.
"Oh, and as a matter of fact, I do want to kill someone," I said.
"Who?"
"You."
"Haha, very funny Seaweed Brain."
I ignored her last comment.
A group a giggling girls scurried past us, but stopped a few feet away. There was probably ten or eleven of them, and they all shoved a dark-haired girl out of their circle, then closed the gap that they made. The girl that they had singled out was probably my age-maybe one year younger. She waited a second, then walked up to Thalia and me. I tried to look at casual as possible as she stood in front of me.
"Uh... Hi," I said quietly, trying to be polite.
For some reason, Thalia didn't get the whole 'polite' thing, because she gave the girl a look of disgust and said, "What?"
The girl looked at Thalia, her nose scrunched up and eyebrows raised, as if to say, Who does this girl think she is?
"I want to talk to Percy," she said.
