Chapter 5

The early warm morning sun greeted me and woke me up. Before I started to prepare anything, I prayed to God that I hope that today nothing would happen to me. Unfortunately, my hopes were all shattered when I heard sword clanking outside the tent. Quickly, I took my sword and went out. The sight I saw was really a dreadful sight. Soldiers fighting each other with ground full of blood. I was really surprised and startled that I couldn’t move. Suddenly, Rowan unsheathed his sword to attack me. Fortunately, I was defended by a loyal soldier and he said, “My princess, please go to the Kingdom of Ecrutia. You are our Kingdom’s only hope. Please don’t worry and don’t let your tears fall. We will follow you later.”

I knew that there’s no chance for him to follow me because the amount of soldiers supporting Rowan were too many. I didn’t want to leave my loyal soldiers but I knew that I would only be a burden to them and so I left with a sword and horse.

Along the way of my escape, I could feel my tears falling and just when I wanted to close my eyes, Scarlett appeared in front of me. “Oh my naïve princess, look at what you have become. I thought you will follow that stupid traveler’s idea of ordering me to leave you but as I thought, at the end, you will just believe me.” Her words pierced through my heart. I was really furious and sad. So I said, “Scarlett how dare you do this to me! Have you forgotten that the one who saved you from that baker when you were little was me! How could you betray your own savior? I even treated you as my friend not my servant or maid. How could you…” She laughed at my statement and said, “You asked me why I did this? The answer is simple I did this because I want to replace you as a princess. Why you can be a princess and I can’t! I even have Rowan, a stupid general assigned to protect you by my side who obeyed everything I told him to do.”

Before any further conversation, our sword met each other and in its way to destroy each other. Just when her sword was close to my neck, I shoved her sword away as my fencing skills and martial arts were better than her. Out of her defeat she said, “Curses, how can I lose to such a spoiled brat. Huh! It doesn’t matter. I will arrive at Kingdom of Ecrutia much faster than you. By the time you arrived, I would have married the prince already. Though, I will grant you mercy that is you will be serving me when you arrive. So don’t forget to drop by the Royal Palace of Ecrutia which will be mine soon.” Her words were so harsh and I was surprised that I could still spoke calmly. I said, “Overconfidence will cause your defeat. Don’t forget, there are still tests waiting for you. Along with all your rival princesses from throughout the country, I will still confront you the next time I see you.” With that, I left her alone, wounded.

I decided to first move to a save place and think about what I should do next as I was aware that Rowan were still pursuing me. I went all my way to the forest near the capital city of Ecrutia. As I reached there, I was confused about what I should do. Before that, I realized that first I need to find a place to rest as I was too exhausted at that time. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring any money along with me the only thing I had were my horse and my sword. I ended up to be sleeping in the forest as night already fallen.

As soon as I woke up, I was surprised as I was not in the forest where I slept yesterday. Instead, I was lying on a bed and a girl was asleep and was sitting beside me. Perhaps, I thought that I dreamed about this, a comfortable house with my family taking care of me, a family which I could rely on. Gladly and surprisingly, the girl beside me woke up and at that time, I believed that this was not a dream because it all seemed so real. “Are you alright, your head was burning yesterday when I found you in the forest nearby my house. I live here alone so you don’t need to worry and just tell me if you need my help. Though I need to work start from the day after tomorrow.” she said.

Even though the house which she lived in was small, I could sense harmony in this house and I felt very comfortable just by seeing it. A small table for 2 people in the center, a bed decorated with flowers and other simple furniture. When she stared at me, I remembered that I had not replied her and I said, “I am really grateful for your hospitality but I have nothing to offer you. Where do you work? Can I help you with your work?”  The answer I got was her laughing and said that I should not bother to help her first because my head were still burning hot. My cheeks turned red as I was embarrassed and at the same time she gave me a sign to keep quiet and offered me a bowl of soup.

Suddenly I felt a real déjà vu as I remembered that when I saved Eric, I was the one who took care of him and told him to keep quiet and eat his meal. When I opened the memories of him again, I felt tears rolling down to my cheeks. I think she was surprised and didn’t know what to do as she looked at me crying. Quickly, I wiped out my tears and smile at her while eating the soup she prepared for me. The worried and nervous look on her face vanished when she saw me eating properly.

After I finished eating, I started to bombard questions on her but before that, I introduced myself first, “My name is Daphne and I am lost while I was traveling. May I ask about your work, what is your job and where do you work? How did you find me in the forest yesterday?” She answered, “I am Rosalie and I am an orphan. I work as a maid for the royal family in this Kingdom, Ecrutia.” Just when she said that, an idea passed through my brain, “If I couldn’t get an excess to the castle, why don’t I disguise myself as a maid and find a chance to reveal my identity?” Excited, I asked her if she could take me with her as a maid in the castle and I was relieved that she was fine with that. But first of all, she told me to recover myself from the high fever and I obeyed her. It was already so long that I couldn’t sleep properly and I was happy that I could sleep well that night.
