Tobias paces back and forth in the hallway with Zeke, but they do not talk. The only thing on their mind was Uriah. He was too kind and too good, and it only got him in trouble.
He was in line, getting food for him and his brother, when the person in front of him pulled a gun on the cashier. Uriah tried to stop him, and it worked, but he was shot in the side in the process. He lost a lot of blood according to the doctors, and the two boys outside of the room were panicking.
Uriah and Zeke's mom was on her way from halfway across the state, where she had been for a few days for work.
"Tris," Tobias frowns.
"Dude, no offense, but now isn't the time for girl trouble!" Zeke shouts.
Tobias came straight here from the gym and his phone was dead, "No, all of them. They have no idea."
"I'll text them," Zeke frowns, a frown on his face. He looked exhausted from stress. The two were supposed to leave for Pennsylvania in five days, but Tobias wasn't sure what was going to happen now.
Zeke and Uriah's mom runs in, tears on her cheeks and a panicked look on her face, "What happened?"
Tobias explains the story, and then tries his best to comfort her as she sobbed. Zeke walks back in and engulfs his mother in a hug.
Tris is the next to show, with Marlene at her side. The two girls look terrified. Zeke probably didn't tell them much.
"Everyone else?" Tobias manages to ask.
"I didn't tell them yet. I don't want a huge crowd," Zeke sighs sadly, "Shauna is already out of town."
Tris ranted to Christina for a long part of the night about how pissed she was, but she couldn't be now. One of her best friends was shot, and she didn't care if Tobias stood her up, she didn't care about anything except Uriah's life.
She felt like she was about to break down into a crying heap on the floor, but she just stood there. She felt tears in her eyes, but she wouldn't let them fall.
Tris doesn't move with big arms wrap around her, instead she slowly lets the tears fall. Tobias holds her tight as she cries for their friend.
Hours later a doctor walks out and starts to speak. Tris had her knees against her chest and she sat on a chair next to Marlene.
Marlene was quiet, mascara stains ran down her cheeks. Her head perked up when the doctor started to talk.
"He's stable, but he isn't breathing steadily on his own," Tris hears the doctor explain.
"Will he live?" She blurts out.
"He's strong, I'm sure he'll be okay," the doctor smiles at them, "Family is allowed in the room, but visiting is done for the day. Come back tomorrow at ten."
Tris drags herself to her feet and hugs Zeke, who squeezes her back tightly. Zeke felt bare without Uriah by his side, and he felt like a broken child when Tris's tiny arms wrapped around him.
"Let's go," Tobias says reluctantly. Marlene doesn't move, and he sits down next to her, "Mar, he's going to be okay."
"I don't wanna leave," She cries, "Just Incase..."
"Just Incase Nothing. I bet you that we'll come back tomorrow and he'll be awake and asking for you," Tobias smiles. Marlene smiles weakly and gets up, following Tris and Tobias out of the hospital.
They all drove separately, but the two of them stay behind after Marlene drives away.
"Why? Why him?" Tris frowns.
