Tris sat in front of the mirror as Christina fixed her hair. In the morning she was at cross country, then she went to lunch with her friends, and now she was getting ready for her party. Coincidentally, her aunt and uncle were out of town a for the few days surrounding the party, which she did not want to have. Christina teamed up with Uriah and Maxine to throw it, though, mostly to get her mind off of the things that had been bothering her.

A few months had passed, and she was not getting very close to the truth. Tris had a difficult time getting close to Matthew, and she only knew what Evelyn would allow her. Seeing Caleb was rare, and even more so with Tobias. She and Uriah had visited him and Zeke twice over the summer for a few days, but the two were so busy with football that they did not see them for much of the trip.

"How is Four?" Christina asks as she digs through a pile of clothes. She had forced Tris to shop for the perfect outfit, but Christina could not choose one.

"Wouldn't know," Tris shrugs, "I haven't talked to him in two weeks."

Christina stops digging and turns to look at Tris, her arms crossed. At the same time, Maxine and Lynn walk into her room. Christina scoffs and says, "That's ridiculous. It's him I bet."

"Chris, I've been busy," Tris shrugs, "He's busy."

"Boy issues?" Lynn asks, and then laughs, "Good thing I don't have a boyfriend."

"You have a girlfriend," Maxine points out.

"But you're so much smarter than a boy," Lynn smiles.

"He can do whatever," Tris sighs, "I'm here, and he's nine hours away. I have so much to worry about, and I want to have fun tonight. I don't need Four here to hold my hand every step of the way."

Christina holds up a white, lace dress and smirks, "You'll look so hot."

"You call her hot a lot," Maxine says, "I'm starting to think maybe Will should look out."

Christina rolls her eyes and throws the dress at Tris, "Go change."

"Oh, and Tris," Lynn butts in, "Happy birthday."

Senior year was approaching, but Tris was in denial. She wanted the summer to last so she was not forced to confront any issues she was having.

Now she was greeting people as they streamed into her house. She lost count of the times that she was told happy birthday, and eventually, she gives up and walks into the party. Uriah was already having his own fun, a girl that Tris did not recognize by his side. He waves at Tris and grins, and then turns back to his drink and the girl.

"Smile a little," Will says as he puts his arm around her shoulders. She jumps slightly and he laughs, "Sorry, but come on. This is your party, enjoy it!"

He jogs off after someone calls his name, and Tris is left alone again. She wanders into the kitchen, frowning as a few juniors run into her. She did not know a lot of the people in her house, but she was used to it. She sighs and leans against the island in the kitchen, and someone taps her on the shoulder. She turns to see Nita holding out a cup toward her, "Happy birthday Tris."

She takes it and smiles, taking a large sip of the drink, "You aren't going to rat me out, are you?"

"Nah," Nita shrugs, "I know this isn't a great time to talk about it, but I was hating you for no reason. I'm over it, and I'm sorry."

Tris hugs Nita, who obviously was not expecting it, but hugs her back, "I'm bored, let's go do something."

For the first time in a long time, Tris actually enjoys herself. In the past, she had been focused solely on what everyone was doing wrong, instead of letting loose and having fun. Before that, she was incredibly reckless, but that was mostly because of Tobias. He had a grip on her, and she had lost her composure because of him for a while.
