Chapter Eleven:

“Is Coleman coming?”

“No, he has some family party to go to tonight.”

“Why didn’t you go with him?”

“Zayn, are you always this stupid? Or is it just on Saturdays?”

He rolled his eyes. “It was just a question, Cass. Don’t need to get all sassy on me. I would’ve thought your boyfriend would have held some sort of priority in your life.”

“He does have priority but right now my best friend is turning twenty and there’s no way in hell that I’d miss it. Coleman understands how important my friendships with you guys are.”

He finished blowing up the last balloon and taped it to the wall. “I was just checking,” he said skeptically. Zayn quickly glanced at the clock on the wall. “You might want to go and start getting ready. It’s almost six now, and Alli is bringing Louis here around 7:30 or so. Liam and I should be fine with the rest of it, it is only a few more streamers left.”

I looked over to Liam who just finished off the other side of the living room and was walking towards us. “Seriously, Cass, go get changed. There’s not that much to do here anyways.”

"If you guys say so. Just give me a call if you need anything, I shouldn’t be too long. Maybe an hour tops?”

I gave them each a quick hug goodbye and as I headed out the door, I yelled over my shoulder, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!”

Alli had gotten Louis here right on time and his face was pretty priceless. The five of us all shouted out surprise and about an hour later all the guests had started to arrive. The bass was now pumping, and it felt like we were in a night club instead of the boys’ apartment.

Weaving my way in and out through the crowds of people I made it back to kitchen where I found Niall sipping on a beer.

“Hey, Niall.”

“Hey, Cass,” he took another sip, “Where’s your boyfriend?”

I sighed and looked down to my phone again. I had texted him several times but he hadn’t responded back, I even called his cell.

He gave me a sympathetic smile towards my actions. “Maybe he’s just busy. You did say he was at a family thing, right? He could just be indisposed.”

A half-hearted smile took over my face. “Yeah, I guess so. It’s just . . . he said he’d call and try to make it around 9:30 but it’s already pushing 11:00. I think I just have nerves is all.”

Niall nodded and set his beer on the counter. “I’m going to go out to the living room, chat a few girls up,” he smirked. “Want to come?”

I laughed lightly. “Nah, I think I’m just going to stay here. You go have fun.”

Everyone seemed to be honestly enjoying themselves. The party scene had never been my cup of tea, and I guess that’s why I was hoping Coleman would show up. I’d have somebody I could hang out with and feel comfortable around. I hadn’t seen much of the boys around except for Niall in the kitchen, and Liam about an hour ago with Danielle.

Checking my phone one last time, I decided to head up to the rooftop where I could call Coleman away from all the noise. When I was up there, I shut the door tightly behind me and pressed call, leaning over the railing and looking out at the city below. Instead of hearing the five consecutive rings I expected, I was put straight to voicemail.
