Chapter Five

One year later

“Butter, butter, butter . . . If I was butter where would I be?” I quietly mumbled.

I was picking up groceries at the supermarket and I was having the hardest time finding butter. Most of the time I would find it by the dairy products – you know somewhere by the eggs – but it wasn’t to be seen.

“Excuse me,” there was a boy about 16 years old stocking the shelves one aisle over, “Could you show me where the butter is? I’ve been trying to locate it but I can’t seem to find any.”

"Sure,” he put on his well-rehearsed smile and brought me back to the same spot I had been minutes ago.

Turns out he had to get more from the back. He clearly needed to work on his re-stocking skills.

“Thank you so much,” I responded to him when he brought it back and slipped it into my cart.

Yeah, my Friday nights weren’t exactly the most exciting. Today was one of those days where I had an excruciating painful day at work, followed by one of the most awkward dates of my life. I just wanted to get home before 10:30 so I could relax in peace.

I started to turn my cart around, not realizing there was a neatly piled pyramid of microwave popcorn, and hit it full on. The boxes went tumbling everywhere including into some guy’s cart right beside mine.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry!” I bent down and started picking all the boxes out of his cart and the ones surrounding on the floor. Cassidy Klutz, to the rescue again.

“Don’t worry about it,” he bent down beside me to help pick them up.

I attempted to put them back in their 5 foot tall pyramid, but was struggling to get it the way it looked before – the same 16 year old boy from earlier simply smirking as he walked by me.

Lovely service,” I grumbled. I turned around to pick up more of the boxes.

Cassidy? Is that really you?”

I looked up to come face to face with Liam Payne.

“Liam? I didn’t realize that was you!”

We had a quick hug before we went back to stacking up the packages of popcorn.

“God, some things will never change about you, will they?”

I blushed at the mess around us. “Forever a klutz, I guess.”

“What are you doing grocery shopping at 9:30 on a Friday night?” he chuckled at the irony of the situation.

“I had a bit of a long day and this was my only chance to get some food in my flat. What about you?”

“The boys were getting hungry and sent me out for a food run. We were sort of running low on supplies.”

I laughed thinking back on how many times the boys made Liam do their dirty work; errand running.

“Hey, Liam, I didn’t know what kinds you wanted so I – Cassidy!”

I chuckled as he sprinted towards me for a hug. “In the flesh and blood, Louis!”

He wrapped his arms around me, so tight that I almost couldn’t breathe, and spun me around in a circle.

Liam chuckled and finished the rest of the stacking while I was crushed by my once-upon-a-time best friend.
