Burn

"I-I..."

"I know, he's an Icarus and a scoundrel."

"He...slept with another woman..."

"He was always a flirt, Eliza."

"That doesn't mean he would cheat on me!" I screamed. I then held my pregnant stomach. It was soon now. The eighth child. And I was now ashamed that it was Alexander's. I stared at Angelica. "I need some time to breath..."

"I...can stay..?" She said just above a whisper.

"Leave me alone, Angelica..." I muttered as she left the house. I pulled a woven basket off the shelf. I then went to grab another two of larger size. Every single letter Alexander has ever wrote me. Me and Philip counted a few years ago. 376. I looked at the fire. I proceeded to hesitantly grab a letter and throw it onto the fire. I felt the hot tears roll down my face. "I thought you loved me..."

"And that I do." I heard a familiar voice from the doorway. Alexander was stood there. Alexander Hamilton in all his glory. The familiar long hair and green tailcoat made me turn away and throw another letter onto the fire. 374.

"Please, love. Don't..." Alexander approached slowly.

"Don't what, Alexander? Don't burn the false love letters you wrote to me?" I retorted.

"She was a seductress. She was in the wrong!"

"You went through with it, Hamilton!" I stood up. The horror was visible in his face when I called him by his surname. That was something I had never done before. I went and sat on the sofa. The door swung open.

"Ma, Pa! I...I saw the Pamphlet." Philip burst into the sitting room. I smiled at him.

"My son..." I gave him a hug. I then realized it wasn't yet time for him to return from boarding school. "Why are you back so soon?"

"I figured after...well...what Pa did..." He looked over my shoulder and gave a small wave to Alexander.

"You didn't have to do that, Philip..." Alexander said guiltily. I took Philip to sit down.

"H-how've you been, Pip?" I asked

"Good...I'm going to go and see my siblings." He waved as he walked up the wooden stairs. Cheers of "Big brother!" could be heard. I threw four more letters onto the fire. 370. I continued this for hours. Alexander telling me how sorry he was. Eventually I was down to my final one. The first one.

I opened it.

My Dearest Elizabeth,

Words cannot express my love for you. I enjoyed every second of your presence that evening. I hope you feel the same. I do not have long to write this but I hope I got the message across.

Your's forever,

Alex Hamilton.

He'd always sign off in the same way when writing to me. I shoved it in his face.

"How much of an utter LIE is that? 'Your's forever'? Ha! Rubbish!"

"Betsy, please..."

"Don't 'Betsy' me!" I shouted in tears and I shoved it into the fire. It was gone. I heard John come down the stairs.

"Ma? Pa? What are you arguing about?"

"Nothing of your concern, John."
