"Come on, Wavekit! It's so nice!"

"If you say so..." Wavekit replied to Wheatkit. Her eyes were still closed and Wheatkit was persuading her to open them. Slowly, she opened her eyes and was stunned by her surroundings. She was in a den of some sort, and surrounded by cats. Then Wavekit saw Wheatkit for the first time. She had a beautiful golden pelt, with dazzling blue eyes.

"Have you seen Wolfkit?" Wheatkit asked.

"Wolfkit?" Wavekit mewed, puzzled.

"Our other kin. He doesn't say much, and he's shy, but I'm sure he would like to see you."

"Okay!" Wavekit sat up. "Where is he?"

"He's over there, next to Curlyfur."

Wavekit padded over to where Curlyfur was. Suckling next to her was Wolfkit. He was a mixture of gray and white, with eyes that were still closed. Taking her eyes off Wolfkit, Curlyfur noticed Wavekit. "Hello Wavekit! I see your eyes have opened at last!"

"Is Wolfkit okay?" Wavekit asked, looking at her kin.

"Yes, he's fine," Curlyfur responded. "He's just younger than you two. Go play with your den mates. That'll take your mind off the subject."

By the way Curlyfur was speaking to her, Wavekit could hardly tell she was her mother.

Padding around the den, Wheatkit told her it was the nursery, Wavekit looked around for some kits at least a moon like she was. Then outside, she heard some playful mewing. Cautiously, she peeked her head out of the brambles that were the entrance to the nursery. There were two other kits, a bit older than her, Wavekit thought.

"Look out!" one yowled. "RiverClan intruders coming in!"

Surprised, Wavekit turned her head toward the entrance of the camp. She didn't see any intruders. Then the other kit pounced on a pine cone. "Great pounce!" the first kit mewed. Wavekit tilted her head. These were what RiverClan looked like? She walked slowly out of the nursery and toward the two kits.

"Those are RiverClan warriors?" she asked, confused.

"Of course not, silly!" one of the kits mewed. "We're playing a game!"

"Oh..." Wavekit understood now. "Can I play too?"

The first kit turned to the second. "Can she?"

The second kit shrugged. "Why not?"

"Okay." The first kit stepped closer to Wavekit. "What's your name?"

"Wavekit," Wavekit answered.

"So you must be one of Curlyfur's litter! I'm Flamekit," the first kit said, and, gesturing to the second kit, "and this is Tussledkit."

"Hi," Wavekit said shyly. Flamekit had a fiery red pelt with amber eyes and Tussledkit had a grey pelt with sparkling green eyes.

"More intruders!" Flamekit yowled. "It's WindClan this time!"

"Attack!" Tussledkit yowled. They all sprang toward something different, Tussledkit a leaf, Flamekit a pine cone, and Wavekit a moss ball. Just then an older cat came into the camp, along with a few others.

"That's Bearfur," Flamekit said. "I think he's your father!"

"My father?" Wavekit' eyes were shining as she looked at the grey warrior. Her father, a big strong warrior!

"That was the dawn patrol," Tussledkit explained. "There are two patrols each day-- dawn and sunset."

"You know so much!" Wavekit said in awe.

"If you want to know more you can go to the elders den," Flamekit mewed. "They know even more than we do!"

"Wavekit!"

Wavekit turned around and saw Curlyfur calling her. "I have to go," she said, "but we're den mates, right? I'll see you soon!"

"Bye!" the two kits said, and Wavekit ran to join her mother in the nursery.
