Being from a small town is kind of simple. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone goes to the same school, they know where you work, and most of the time where you live. Seems kind of creepy, and to be honest I think it is. My family, the Hazards, are kind of royal here. Our family created this town, kinda. I guess you can say the originals. Then recently, at the beginning of the school year, the other originals moved back here. Just the dad and two sons, which they happen to both go to the same school as me. One of them in the grade above and one in the same grade. Their family and my family have some bad history and for some reason it still carries on to the day. No one from my family has ever told me why. My brother and I question a lot but no one will tell us. They always respond 'When you're older you will understand' and my brother and I just think that is bullshit. We are both in high school. I know, I may sound like I have my life together and I can handle the truth but in reality I just want to know. My brother, Sam, is in tenth grade and I'm in eleventh. We are very close, luckily. I drive him to school everyday. Somehow we never fought. We just arrived to school though. I walked up to my locker and opened it. Balloons flew out of my locker. Ugh, I forgot it was my birthday.
"Happy Birthday!" My best friends Emily and Kate came over with smiles on their faces.
"Thanks guys but I'm not feeling like celebrating my birthday this year."
"Come on. You said you would move on and enjoy life but you haven't. Plus you're seventeen now. One year closer to eighteen." Kate grinned.
"What I think she's trying to say is that it's been a year since your mom died. I know it has actually been exactly a year but that's not the point. You said six months ago that you could at least move on a little. Come on, you should make the best out of every single moment. You out of anyone should know that." Emily grinned.
"Fine but just something small tonight."
"Fine but only because it's Monday. Friday is a whole different scenario. Friday is Halloween afterall." Kate smiled.
"Wait, did you hear that the Salvatores are back in town?" Emily said as I grabbed some books out of my locker.
"Yes and the last time we saw them was the fifth grade. They pretty much ganged up and picked on everyone. They were extremely immature. I don't think they've changed from their dorky and immature selves." I closed my locker then looked at Emily.
"Um, maybe they have changed. At least the dorky part has." Emily was looking passed me.
"How would you know?" I raised an eyebrow. Emily forced me to turn around. Two guys walked out of the principal's office. They both looked my way, "No way that is them. They didn't look anything like that when they were younger."
"We've all changed since the fifth grade girl. They definitely have." Kate smiled checking them out.
"I'm heading to history." I rolled my eyes and walked to my history class. My history teacher has been sick for the past two weeks. I hope she's ok. I sat down in my usual seat. I'm early but I just couldn't stand them talking about them. I grabbed my notebook out of my bag and placed it on my desk. When I looked up people started to walk in. Then both brothers walked in. I thought one was a year older? The younger one sat to the left of me and the older one sat behind me. I looked to my right and tapped on Meghan, a childhood friend of mine, and leaned over, "I thought one of them was older?"
"Oh apparently he was out of school for a year due to being sick or something so he's a year behind." She told me. I nodded a bit then sat back up.
"Good morning class. My name is Rick Saltzman. I'm your new history teacher. Before you ask what happened to your last teacher ask the principal. I can't answer that question; and because I don't know what happened." He chuckled, "Anyways where did you guys leave off?"
