Every crime show that I've ever watched says that the last thing you want to do when you encounter a psychopath is treat them like one.
So why would you treat the only good person in my life like a psychopath?
My lip stuttered as I stared into the eyes of a broken man through a glass wall. He gave me a look of sadness that shattered my heart.
"You shouldn't be here [your name]." I listened through a small telephone that connected our voices. His voice was not the one I remember, but instead his voice was shaky and full of fear.
"I-I miss you so much." I managed to speak, dodging his earlier statement. I could see by the way he looked at me, he felt full of regret.
"You can't be here, I'm a murderer, I'm sick!" He spoke with a more firm tone this time. I glanced at the desk at his side to see him curling his hand into a fist.
"You need help, you shouldn't-"
"You hate me, my parents are ashamed of me, everyone hates me!" He cut me off.
"I don't hate you Nathan, I kn-"
"Do you think I'm a psychopath?" He looked at me with a pleading expression. "I need to know what you think of me."
I slowly started to comprehend what he was asking of me and started to gather words to say. I took a deep breath and spoke.
"I think, that you're the love of my life. I know who you are, and what the people here think you are, is different than the reality. You used to bring me flowers and remember every detail of random things I used to tell you. You used to drive out to my house at 3 in the morning when my parents fought and I had nowhere to stay without a single complaint. I think you're a strong, driven man, who has a lot of issues that he's dealing with, but is a good person. You're a good person Nathan and I could never imagine being with anyone else. However, I do think you need guidance to help you get through some tough situations, that I can't help you with. So, no. You're not a psychopath."
He looked at me as a tear fell from his eyes. "I love you so much." He held a hand onto the glass that was separating us and I placed mine on top of his. It looked like he was deep in thought before he spoke once again. "Which is why I can never see you again."
My heart stopped at those words. "Why not?" Panic started to set in.
"I'm never going to get out of this place, [your name]. I can't bear to see your face, knowing that you're wasting your life on me. A guy who you can't even touch without having a glass separating us. I can't touch you, hug you, and fuck- I can't kiss you. What can I do for you [your name]? I can't do anything. So that's why I can't see you anymore [your name]. You deserve a better life, with someone who can support you and truly love you. Every time I see you a part of me breaks." He removed his hand from the glass and gave he an apologetic look.
Tears were falling rapidly from my eyes. "No, Nathan you can't do this to me! I love you! Please don't go, I have nothing else! No no no Nathan! Please!" Nathan said nothing as he stood up and walked away from the booth. He left the room while being escorted by two guards. He gave me one final look. A look I will never forget.
And that was the last time I ever saw Nathan Prescott.
