It was the same thing over and over again. He'd get with a girl and leave them. Time after Time he'd get sick of them. It was like taking a drug, you had your highs and lows, but the highs become shorter and the lows become harder- so you quit.
He didn't see her beauty, he'd be too focused on obtaining the highs. As soon as he saw her, he knew this time would be different. She was shy, but he could snap at any second. She was vulnerable but he was discreet and secretive.
She wasn't happy, and neither was he.
They had found each other during a rainstorm, both out in the cold figuring they might as well drown themselves in something other than depressing thoughts. She had explained she was upset because her mother thought she was a disappointment and she didn't know what to do. He had said three infamous words, "Follow your heart." After they had bumped into each other, they became inseparable.
Their relationship was like butterflies fluttering in a sunny valley, or at least that's what Samuel explained it as. Nathan, who was previously a more negative person, now had a smile on his face whenever he was with her. They were an everlasting high. It became notorious at Blackwell, if you were in a relationship you strived to have one like theirs.
Then, everything came cracking apart. Nathan became violent. He needed something more, and he knew he couldn't contain himself from it. She wasn't ready for the nightmare the relationship would become. At first, he'd get upset because of a minor thing. He'd throw things, slap her, punch her, and she'd always end up in the same place, the corner, not putting up a fight. After a while, he didn't need a reason anymore.
They'd get into fights all the time, and she'd stay with him, hoping, longing the two would return to the way they once were. Alas, it never did.
When she'd wake up with bruises scattered across her delicate body she'd try her best to hide them, maintain that perfect image of a relationship, pretend everything was fine. She'd wince as students down the hall would gasp and stare in awe of the 'perfect' couple in front of them. Shining smiles when they're looking, tears when their backs are turned.
She doubted herself, of course it wasn't going to work out, how could she be such a fool from the beginning? After more bruises and more scars, She didn't feel sad anymore. She felt numb. And numb- she new, was somehow worse.
The butterfly's wings were broken.
She stopped caring. She showed up to class with a frown, not bothering to cover up the bruises. People gasped, but for a different reason now. When he'd ask her if he wanted to leave her she never spoke, not afraid of the abuse anymore.
So she left. She had nothing left in Arcadia Bay, she was broken. When her foot stepped off the bus she realized she had no where to go. Her mind thought back to the one piece of advice she'd received she had trusted before, "Follow your heart."
But if your heart was in a billion pieces, which piece do you follow?
