"Dragonite, Hyper Beam." A darkish purple orb of light forms at Dragonite's mouth before a beam of energy is released, headed straight towards the other trainer's Pokémon: a Dugtrio.
The Dugtrio's trainer, I believe his name is Ian, calls out to his Pokémon. "Dugtrio, you're fast enough to dodge it!" The kid has actually put up a pretty good fight against Lance. I mean, he made it this far, so I don't know what I expected. Still, it's surprising.
Well, Lance doesn't seem to be struggling, however. While two of his own Pokémon are down, Ian is down to his last two. Unfortunately, I don't think Ian will be able to pull out a victory. A shame really. I would've love to see Lance lose.
Oh. You may be wondering what I'm doing. Well, Lance's idea of monitoring me is just me doing a lot of work and rarely leaving his side. It's been like this for about a week now, but it feels like so much longer. One job he has assigned me is to be his referee in battles. They don't happen to often with him being the champion and all, but that may actually be a bad thing. That could mean sitting with Lance an upwards of four hours with nothing to do. It also means I have to wear this stupid referee's outfit but at least it doesn't have a cape.
Anyway, lucky for me, I have experience in refereeing battles. I was trained in it a little when I was younger, and I did it for Akia a few times in the past.
Speaking of Akia, she was extremely upset when I left. I think she's worried about me. It's hard to say. She seemed concerned about me, but I have the feeling it wasn't because she didn't think I would be safe. Besides, Akia knows me. I'm incredibly cautious, especially when it comes to protecting myself. Still, I can't help but wonder what her issue was. . .
Back to the battle, Ian seems to be making a bit of leeway. He commanded his Dugtrio to use Stone Edge, which managed to cause a lot of damage to Lance's Dragonite. Because of the Hyper Beam, Dragonite has to recharge so Ian practically gets a free Stone Edge.
The pointed rocks form from the ground beneath Dragonite and rise up outlined in a purplish aura. About five massive stones pierce Dragonite, sending the Pokémon up a few meters into the air. Unable to maintain that height, Dragonite falls and hits the ground with a large thud.
"Dragonite, return!" I look over to Lance. His eyebrows are raised in what could only be intrigue. He seems pretty happy with this trainer. Even though I can tell Ian isn't going to win this. "Gyarados, let's go." Lance sends out his Gyarados. He got a little upset with me the other day. Apparently, he doesn't like being questioned on whether Gyarados is a dragon or not (which it isn't). Well, maybe he was more upset that I said he was more of a Flying-type trainer than a Dragon-type trainer. Whatever, it's true.
When Gyarados emerges from his Pokéball, a sharp roar echoes across the room. Intimidate. Dugtrio burrows underground slightly. Judging by the look on Ian's face, this isn't going too well.
"Gyarados," Lance calls, "Use Ice Fang."
"Dugtrio, dodge and use Return!" Gyarados's teeth start to form an icy mist around them, and as he lunges for Dugtrio, the Ground-type Pokémon slips sideways and whacks Gyarados while surrounded in a pale blue aura. Unfortunately for Ian, it doesn't appear his attack did too much damage.
"Now Gyarados, while it's close. Use Waterfall!" Before Ian has time to say a command, Gyarados forms a pillar of water and slams head first into Dugtrio, sending the smaller Pokémon skidding backwards in the ground. I wait a moment before giving the call.
"Dugtrio is unable to battle. The winner of the match is Gyarados."
"Dugtrio, return," Ian mutters. He knows it's over, but I don't think he's quite given up. How admirable. I would've just forfeited instead of wasting everyone's time. He sighs before calling his last Pokémon. "Come on out, Primeape!" Oh yeah. It's over.
"Gyarados, Waterfall." Once again, Gyarados launches himself in a tower of water towards his opponent.
"Block yourself with Stone Edge!" Huh. What a unique tactic. Pointed rocks rise in front of Primeape and form a shield. Unfortunately for them, Gyarados is very well trained. He goes into a ninety-degree angle upwards, avoiding the stones, before coming back down full force on the Fighting-type Pokémon. There's a gruff screech as the two Pokémon meet. Gyarados pulls back as the dust clears. Primeape is still on its feet, but the attack caused a major amount of damage. Its also become victim to the side effect of Waterfall. Primeape stands there grimacing, unable to move. Its flinching.
"Gyarados, let's finish this." Without needing to hear the attack, Gyarados summons a watery pillar one final time and propels himself into Primeape. The stone shield is still up, so Gyarados takes a hefty amount of damage, but not as much as Primeape. The Pokémon is sent hurtling backwards, slamming into the wall just behind its trainer. I make the final call.
"Primeape is unable to battle. The winner of the match is Gyarados. Therefore, the battle goes to Champion Lance." Joy.
As Ian calls back his Pokémon, Lance approaches him.
"You fought determinedly. Your Pokémon have responded to your strong and upstanding nature. Do not let this defeat discourage you. As a Trainer, you will continue to grow strong with your Pokémon. I hope to see you again once more."
The kid, while disappointed, looks resolved to win. "Yes sir. Thank you.The doors for the exit open and Ian makes his way out. I feel like they could have made a separate exit for trainers who lose. Now they have to walk back through the other four they actually defeated and out into the Pokémon League rest area where everyone is will know that he lost. Oh well. I'm not going to be the one to suggest it.
Lance turns back to me. "You did well today," he says begrudgingly.
I nod. "Can we go?"
"No. There are at least two more battles scheduled for today."
. . . I fucking hate this.
