Chapter 2
“I’m gonna pick up the pieces and build a Lego house--”
“Hey Josh, what time are you coming to pick me up?” I said answering my cell phone.
Josh took a minute to reply, “How about 4? I have a surprise for you.”
“What kind of surprise?”
“If I told you, then it wouldn’t be much of a surprise would it?”
“Can you give me a hint?”
“Nope.”
“Okay, fine, I’ll see you at 4.” I said in a disappointed tone, hoping he might let me in on the secret.
“That’s not going to work on me!”
“Ugh! Fine! I love you.”
“Love you too, see you at 4.”
I checked the clock and realized it was almost 2 and I hadn’t done my hair yet. Carson worked her magic, curling my hair into perfect ringlets while Mallory did my makeup. Mallory was bolder than I usually am with makeup, so instead of my normal mascara and lip-gloss, she had done my makeup full out. She brushed foundation over my cheeks, forehead, and chin, adding blush to my cheeks. She applied the perfect amount of eye shadow, liner, and mascara. To top it off, she put a bold red lipstick on my lips.
They walked me to my closet and picked out a cute dress, tights, and a sweater. I put on the outfit they had picked out, as they looked under my bed for a pair of boots to wear. They found my old combat boots and I pulled them on and searched for some jewelry. I decided on a pair of stud earrings and the “C” necklace Josh got me for my birthday back in September.
When I looked in the mirror, I gasped. I actually looked pretty. I knew I wasn’t ugly, but I had never felt pretty until this moment. I turned and smiled at my friends and they pulled me into a hug. We walked down the stairs together, and they went out the back door as I went into the living room to wait for Josh.
Just as I had sat down, the doorbell rang. My dad beat me to the door and opened it, allowing Josh to step inside. Even though Josh and I had been on plenty of dates before, my dad still felt the need to interrogate him.
Josh held his hand out for my dad to shake. Step one: Shake his hand. Check.
“Hello sir, how are you?” Step two: Call him sir. Check.
“Hello Josh, I am doing quite well, how are you?” My dad answered.
“I am doing just fine, thank you,” Josh replied, smiling. Step three: Smile. Check. I beamed at Josh from the other side of the room. He had actually remembered what we went over.
Josh came and sat next to me on the couch and my dad sat across from us, questioning Josh in every way possible.
“What are your plans tonight?”
“We are going to have dinner with my parents and then watch a movie with them at my house,” he replied. I internally groaned. I loved his parents, but I wanted some alone time, we hadn’t seen each other in a while.
