Chapter 3

“Charlotte, we’re home! Please come down and help with the groceries!” Mom yelled up the stairs.

“Coming Mom!” I hollered back. I glanced at the counter and began taking the groceries and putting them in their designated areas in the pantry. My mom and Abigail walked back in with the remaining few bags and helped me put them away.

Abby handed me the Wheat Thins, “Mommy said these were for you.”

“Yes, thank you, they are,” I said taking the box from her hands. “Hey, guess who I talked to today?”

“Who? Who?” Abby questioned me, clearly curious.

“Luke! He said he loved his care package and that he wants us to call him more often.”

“Did he like my pictures?”

“Of coarse he did, that’s all he talked about! He has them right next to his bed so he can see them at night,” I said, and it wasn’t completely made up. I saw the drawings behind him as we talked, but I had no idea if they were by his bed or not.

This made Abigail very excited, “I’m going to draw him some more for next time!”

My mom walked back into the kitchen, she had gone to put the grocery bags and dry foods in the pantry. “So, how was your date with Joshua last night?” she asked me, clearly unaware of what had actually happened last night.

“It was great! He took me downtown and had a candle light dinner set up on top of one of the old buildings downtown. Then we watched the sunset and he dropped me off at Carson’s. Last night I realized I didn’t have my phone and that I had left it in his car, so he dropped it by Carson’s house earlier this morning.”
“Well that sounds lovely,” she smiled.

“He is a charmer, I’ll give him that. Did you hear me say I talked to Luke earlier?”

“No, how is he? Did he like the cookies?”

I chuckled, “He’s doing great, and he said the cookies were fantastic. Oh, guess what Luke told me? He got promoted to SFC.”

My mom gave me the same look I had given Luke just a few minutes before.

“That means Sergeant First Class.”

“Oh my goodness, that’s so cool!” Basically what that meant was she was going to tell all of the customers who came into her café about his promotion.

“I know right! And he didn’t even seem a little bit excited! Anyways, I’m going to go upstairs. Call me if you need anything.”

I picked the box of Wheat Thins off the counter and went to my bedroom. I pulled out my phone and checked to see if I had missed any calls or texts. And I had, but not from who I was expecting. It was from Ryan, Carson’s twin brother. She gave me his number last summer when she dropped her phone in the toilet, but I thought I made sure my number wasn’t saved in his phone.

Ryan: Hey Charlotte :)

Me: Hello? How did you get my number?

Ryan: I got it off Carson’s phone

Me: That’s not creepy at all. What do you want?

Ryan: For you to stay away from that Anderson kid. He’s dangerous

Me: You mean Josh? Why would I stay away from him? He’s my boyfriend.
