Chapter 9

After Josh told me everything that had happened to his sister, it all began to make sense, but at the same time, more confusing. When Ryan had said Josh was dangerous, had this been what he meant? And if so, how would Ryan know about this?

But right now, I had other things to worry about. Well, two things.

“Sammy, baby, you have to drink your bottle. If you don’t, you won’t get big and tough like Daddy!” I cooed, even though he probably had no idea what I was saying. Josh was in the other room, packing diaper bags and picking out clothes for the twins. He had picked out 4 outfits already, but I sent him back each time, because they didn’t match. And I don’t mean they didn’t match each other, I mean each outfit didn’t match itself.

“What about this?” Josh asked, holding up an outfit for each of them.

“Yes, that’ll work. Will you try to feed Sam while I get Quinn ready? I can’t him to take his bottle,” I said taking the clothes from his hands and giving him the bottle. After last night, we decided to call Rylee Quinn by her middle name, in memory of Josh’s sister. “Make sure you keep the end up, so he isn’t drinking air,” I reminded him.

“Yes, ma’am!”

I gave him a look.

“We need to set a good example for them,” he said in a “duh” tone.

I smiled and picked Quinn up from the blanket stretched out on the ground and laid her down on the couch. “Hey baby girl, are you ready to go see some other babies?” She grinned a toothless grin up at me and kicked her legs. “Yeah? Okay, well let’s get dressed first!” I slipped her pajamas off of her and threw them into the laundry basket and changed her diaper. I ever so gently, pulled the onesie over her head and her teeny arms though the sleeves, and snapped it together. I slid the matching little pants with some frill on the bottom over the onesie. I put socks on her feet so they wouldn’t get cold, and pinned the little hair she had, back with a tiny bow.

Lifting her off the couch and putting Quinn in her car seat, I buckled her up and gave her a pacifier. When I looked over to Josh, he had Sam in his arms, feeding him the bottle and he had almost finished. He must have sensed me staring, because he turned to look at me, “What?”

“Nothing, you’re just really good with him,” I said, handing him a burp cloth. “And since you are so great, you get to burp him while I go pee.” I ran out of the room before he could object.

“Charlie! You can’t leave me alone with both of them!” He hollered after me. I chuckled and took my time going to the bathroom and making my way back.

“Back so soon?” Josh asked when I returned. He had dressed Sammy and put him in his car seat next to Quinn.

“See, that wasn’t so bad was it?” I kissed him on the cheek. “We’ve got this,” I whispered.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you, too.”

Just as I had suspected, the meeting with all the other students and their babies, was interesting. Mr. Patterson asked everyone how our first night went and despite what had really happened last night, and we, like everyone else said that it went okay, though taking care of a baby is a lot harder than they make it look on TV. There were two other couples that had two babies, Justin and Hannah, and Taylor and Samantha, which meant that all the babies had been chosen.
