Virgil and I watched as Kyle and mom took the argument outside, I guess so we didn't have to listen. Virgil and I walked over to the room and tried the door. Fortunately, it was unlocked.
The room smelled of smoke, and it was colder than the rest of the house. It was bigger than mine and Virgil's room, but the huge pool table in the middle made it seem smaller. There was a poker table in the corner and cards and beer bottles were littered everywhere. Posters were overlapping each other on every wall, along with a few taped-up magazines.
"Ok, who is going to hide it?" I asked.
Virgil instantly shoved the phone in my hands a took a step out of the room.
"Really?" I stared at him.
He put his hands up," I'm not having Kyle catch me in the act! He's already tried to get me in trouble multiple times. And besides, you never get in trouble so with a quivering lip and/or fake tears will have mom on your side."
I groaned," Ok ok. But you're still on guard."He nodded and I walked further into the room. I first put the phone under the pool table, but then Kyle would see it immediately. I was also thinking about putting it under a chair at the Poker table, but he would see it immediately. Maybe by the wall? Ugh, now I'm running out of ideas.
A few minutes passed and I still haven't figured where I should put the phone. I have to put it in a place where Kyle wouldn't find it right away, but enough for him to see it and forget about a blaming it on us.
"Patton! What is taking so long?! Just put the phone somewhere!," Virgil yelled at me.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I just don't know where to put it!"
"Well 'know' sooner! Mom and Kyle are gonna be coming in here any moment because I literally see them through the window and I don't think they're arguing anymore."
"Ok I'll hurry!"As I said that, I heard the door open and Virgil let out a tiny scream before shutting the room's door. He probably went out to stall. Ok ok. Where to put it?! I looked directly at some broken bottles under the pool table. Bingo! I quickly put the phone under the bottles and ran back towards the door, eyeing the phone the whole time. I opened the door and ran into someone other than Virgil. The person was bigger and more masculine. Uh oh.
"Why were you in here?! You have no rights!! BOTH OF YOU DON'T!!," Kyle shouted.
I looked at Virgil, who was currently having his hair furiously gripped by Kyle. He looked petrified. I accidentally looked back under the pool table where I hid the phone. When I looked back, Kyle had followed my gaze and had found it. He let go of Virgil's hair and stormed over to the pool table. I nervously looked at Virgil and we both then looked at Kyle, who was now pulling his broken phone from under the table. He seemed both shocked and angry.
"Wha- my PHONE!," he looked at the both of us. "You! You both did this huh?!"
"No no! We didn't do it! Maybe you left it here and someone broke it by accident?" Virgil said.
Kyle walked over to us and poked Virgil in the chest," It was your idea wasn't it? Is this some sort of joke? Some sick revenge?! HUH?!"But before we could answer, Kyle pulled me and Virgil by my ears and and pulled us both out into the living room. My mom had watched us, only watched and done nothing. Why?! He let us go eventually and pushed us towards the wall. He put his arms by both of our heads and stared at us both. He looked like the angriest bull you could ever imagine.
"Can one of you explain to me, why you," he looked at Virgil. "Were standing by my door and you," he looked at me. "Were in my room?"
I tried to look at Virgil but Kyle took me by my hair and made me look back at him.
"Don't you dare look at each other for help! One of you isn't telling me anything and for that, both of you are getting yelled at!!," he screamed and I lost it.
I felt a few tears run down my cheek, and I could tell that drew enough attention.
"Oh stop crying! You're being such a child!," Kyle sneered.
At this point, I started to sob. I couldn't help it, but this was the scariest experience I've ever had. Not even the rock incident beat this. Soon enough, Kyle started mimicking my whining and speaking in a mocking whiny voice.
"Aww you're gonna cry about it? Are you a baby?? Do you need a nappy little baby cause you're getting a timeout?" He started to laugh.
"Cut it out!"I looked at the voice, which came from Virgil. Kyle looked at Virgil with flared nostrils and I felt Virgil grip my arm.
"What did you just say to me you little freak?" Kyle pulled Virgil from the wall and towards the dining table.
When Virgil was finally up against the chair, my mom decided to step in.
"Ok, that's enough Kyle. You're scaring them!"
"No! Because these little demons decide to pull a little 'prank' on me by completely destroying my phone! And I'm not stopping until they get what they deserve!," Kyle argued without looking away from Virgil. "And I'm starting with this freak of a child!"That's when I lost my temper. People can see me as a soft person. But not when it comes to my brother.
I pushed myself away from the wall and kicked Kyle in the shins, which made him stumble away from Virgil. He looked at me and then walked over to me. Before I could react, he pushed me to the ground and I cried in pain.
"Hey! That's my brother you jerk!!," Virgil screamed and pushed Kyle away from me.
Kyle then full-on shoved Virgil into an end table. We all heard something break and we felt the room get warm. We all looked behind Virgil and what he knocked over. A lit candle.
We watched as flames danced across the room, soon reaching towards the door. And as soon as we knew it, it got too hot. The air was too smokey for anyone to breath properly.
Our house was on fire.
