XXIII - Angel

The street was empty now.

"We should fly before they come after us." Theo said. "Lift us, quick."

He clenched to me. I tried my best to focus on flying. A doubtful spark of energy warmed up my toes.

"Luci, hurry up!" Theo hissed.

"Shut up, I have to focus!"

I heard footsteps. "Somebody's coming!" Theo whispered, and he tried to let me go. But that'd be too late. He must've seen us. I wrapped my arms around Theo in a passionate embrace.

"Act as if we're lovers!" I whispered.

"Lovers kiss." he whispered back.

"I'll kill you if y-" At that moment his lips were pressed against mine.

It seemed to take forever for the footsteps to fade away. As soon as they did, I broke out of Theo's arms and spat in the snow.

"Did you know you taste like slimy frogs?" I said.

"It was your idea." Theo laughed.

"Not the kissing!" I spat again, but the disgusting taste didn't leave.

"Are we going to fly, or what?" Theo asked impatiently.

"Not like that again." I growled. "If another one sees us, I don't want to need that excuse again."

"What's the plan, then?"

I walked around Theo, who turned with me. "Stand still!" I commanded. I reached out to Theo's back and focused on my hand- I'm way better with my hand anyway! I bent and created some bones and muscles, created some extra skin, and then ripped Theo's shirt with my other hand as two white, feathered wings started to grow out of Theo's back. "There you go." I said, and inspected my creation one last time.

Theo's folded his wings around his body so he could see them. "I can... fly with these?" he asked.

"Well, that's what I made them for." I laughed. "Your turn." I turned my back to him.

"I can't make that." Theo's said. "I have no summoning powers."

"Oh, I have to do everything myself!" I sighed, and wrapped my arms around myself so that I could make a pair of wings on my back.

I was almost done when I saw a door open. A woman in a black coat walked out.

"Oh no..." I said breathlessly.

The woman saw us. She stared at us and our wings, and fell down to her knees.

"Oh, angels of God!" she cried, folding her hands together. "Have mercy on my soul!"

As if we had done it a thousand times before, we spread our wings. I ran a few steps forward as I had seen birds do, and flew up into the sky. The rushing of wings behind me told me that Theo was following me. At an amazing speed we spiralled upwards, higher and higher, into the clouds.
