LIAM
I listened to Delilah softly humming to the music playing, her hand resting over her bump with ease despite the fact that we would be seeing Carissa in a few minutes. It appeared that slamming things against the wall helped calm her anger but now I was the one furious. How dare Carissa try to take Adrian without so much as sending a text message asking if she could?
It wasn't helping to know that Delilah was hiding something from me. The way she reacted when I asked if something happened made me think that something did happen.
Putting aside the deep dislike I had for Brian had taken all of my will, but for Delilah I did it. When I called him and let him know about the baby, I knew he would rush over to see her. She needed all the support she could get. Who the hell was I to stop it? If the guy could help her, I wouldn't stop him. Not as long as she was okay, as long as the devastated look on her face disappeared.
Delilah trusted him for whatever reason, and I was fine with that so long as he didn't pressure her into anything. As long as he was clear on the fact that she didn't feel the same way about him.
Something happened though. Maybe I was being paranoid or stupid, whatever you want to call it, but I knew something happened. She looked up to me, lips pressed into a thin line, her eyes flashing with a brief glimpse of regret.
Something definitely happened.
Despite my insistence of her waiting in the car, Delilah slipped her hand in mine and we walked together towards the school.
The first person I saw was Carissa sitting on a chair with Adrian next to her, his broad smile telling me that they weren't discussing anything potentially harmful. Still, Delilah tensed next to me, and I squeezed her hand.
"Hi," I greeted the receptionist.
"Dad, mom!" Adrian exclaimed, leaving Carissa behind.
"Hey bud."
Carissa stood up with an apologetic smile. "Liam... Delilah," she waved. "Sorry, I know I shouldn't have done this but I was-"
"No excuses," I muttered, restraining myself from saying what I really wanted to say. "I don't understand why you thought you'd be able to pull off this sh... crap."
"I'm sorry, Liam. I understand why you're angry," she said with a small smile. "I was worried. I thought I recognized Caleb from the photos I've seen of him, and all I could think of was Adrian being okay."
"You saw Caleb?" Delilah asked, a hint of concern in her voice.
"Yeah," Carissa replied. "I should have called, sorry again."
I glared at her. I wasn't buying her shit. Something was off about her, she just didn't seem like herself. Not after our last interaction, not after what she did slicing Delilah's tires. And when her gaze fell on Delilah's growing bump, I saw a hint of the anger that she was hiding.
"You're pregnant," Carissa said with a small smile. "Liam, why didn't you tell me that you were going to be a dad again?"
The receptionists in the office were looking at us like we were some type of reality TV show unfolding live in front of them. I wasn't able to hide them venom in my words. They proved hurtful to the woman who'd been my friend and companion for several years.
"How was I going to tell you after what things you've done?" I said, lowering my voice so that Adrian wouldn't hear. Noticing what was happening, Delilah stepped out of the office with our son. "You think I don't know what you did? Slashing Delilah's tires? The shit you pulled in my office? Harrasing her at the beach? I don't trust you Carissa, and it's a shame because we used to be friends."
