"What the hell is wrong with you two? This is so not the time to be fighting! Someone is dead, why can't you two get along for five minutes?" Lee shouted from upstairs while Kit was in the kitchen. She sat on a stool with a red mixing bowl on her lap. She was slowly mixing the contents that would later form a cake. Kit had changed into black jeans and a sweater, with a grey blanket draped around her. She was staring deeply into the bowl, feeling a heavy weight in her chest.
"You!" Lee exclaimed, pointing at Shawn. He was sitting on his bed and Lee stood in front of him. "Go downstairs and make things better before they get any worse," he said in a hushed angry voice. Shawn stood up and walked down to the kitchen. He lingered on the threshold between the kitchen and the living room.
"Kit, I'm sorry," Shawn said, holding the back of his neck. Kit slowly looked up from the bowl.
"It's okay, why were you two fighting anyways?" Kit asked, looking back down and Shawn sighed.
"Did you and Cassidy have sex?" Shawn blurted out. Kit looked up in shock.
"No, we didn't! Did he say we did?" Kit asked, angrily. The room went silent. It was enough assurance for Kit. Kit's face turned red with anger. But the anger soon faded into sadness. She couldn't help but just let it consume her. It was like any anger she had, had diminished into a new feeling. She felt a tightness in her chest, a physical manifestation of betrayal and regret.
"Why the hell would you say that to Shawn? You know he loves Kit," Lee said to Cassidy, addressing the cuts on his face.
"I was only screwing with him. I didn't know he likes her," Cassidy defended, purposefully not using Lee's words. Cassidy knew Shawn liked Kit and he was afraid that he did love her. CC was jealous because of it, too. He knew Kit liked Shawn. Cassidy liked being around Kit because she was sweet and defenseless and she understood his humor. She wanted someone who would help her and listen to her and he knew this. She told him exactly what she didn't like about what Shawn did. He knew she was broken and he wanted to fix her. He wanted to be the one to make her better and it killed him to see her want someone who would only make her worse.
"You know something," Lee asked. Cassidy stayed quiet. "What is it, Fudgeball!" Lee demanded. Cassidy sighed heavily.
"I promised I wouldn't say anything. To be honest I've said too much already," Cassidy said. Small Lee grabbed Cassidy's shirt collar and pulled him near his face.
"Tell me. Now," Lee said, threatened.
"Okay, okay. I'll talk," Cassidy held up his hands and Lee let go.
"Shawn has been hanging out with somebody else," Cassidy said, meekly.
"Who, Shitstain!" Lee questioned. Cassidy had to think of someone and fast. He couldn't tell Lee about Jess. Shawn only confided in CC because he had enough blackmail on him for every day of the year.
"M-my sister," Cassidy panicked. He didn't know who else to think of.
"Gizelle?" Lee asked. "Isn't your sister like thirty?"
"She's twenty-three!" Cassidy said.
"That's still not good, CC. Shawn is not legal meat yet!" Lee said, throwing his arms open in a dramatic downward direction.
"It's not that bad! Besides, they're happy," Cassidy said. Lee tilted his head upward and closed his eyes.
"SHHAAAAAAAAAWN!" Lee, at the top of his lungs, screamed from upstairs. Shawn and Kit looked up.
"Oh no," Shawn said, scared for his life. Kit gave him a piteous look. They looked around a corner to see Lee walking downstairs, dragging a large, wooden plank behind him.
