It was around 6:48 when Kit and Lee had played Clue so many times, they were just guessing who was the murderer. When Lee finally got bored, they put away Clue and Lee pulled out an even more perfectly kept Monopoly. It was almost 11:00 when Lee flipped the Monopoly board. Lee was getting frustrated and Kit was relieved it was over. Then they laughed about it for a few minutes.
"Oh, we have school tomorrow," Kit said and Lee groaned and laid down on the floor. "Come on, Lee. Let's go to sleep," Kit said, putting away the board game. Lee sighed and agreed. They both changed into their pajamas and laid down to sleep.
An hour had past when there was a noise in the once quiet house. Kit sat up and scanned the dark room, slowly adjusting to the darkness. She looked up and saw the shape of Lee sleeping in his bed. Kit quietly stood up and started to sneak out of Lee's room to see what the noise was.
The house was so quiet, it was like there was no one else in the house. The only thing assuring Kit that it wasn't empty was the fact that she knew Lee was there. Kit walked carefully down the hallway, holding her arm against her so her heart didn't pump out of her chest. She heard the noise again and she stopped and stood where she was standing. It was clearer now. It sounded like something or someone was inside the house. Deep inside the house, like they had been there the whole time. A deep, rough dragging sound came from above Kit and she froze in her place. She hesitantly looked up at where the dragging was coming from; the attic. Kit slowly walked closer to the hanging piece of string on the ceiling. As she went to reach for the cord, she heard a creak behind her and froze.
"What the hell are you doing?" Lee asked, in a hushed voice. Kit turned around and jumped, but then sighed in relief.
"I heard a noise and I went to go see what it was," Kit said and Lee rolled his eyes. Kit looked down and saw that Lee was holding a baseball bat. There was another sound that came from the first floor and Lee and Kit turned towards it. They both looked at each other and walked towards the stairs. Lee slowly walked towards the stairwell lifting the bat, resting it on his shoulder. Kit was clinging to the back of Lee's shirt and tried not to trip him. Lee peeked down the stairs and saw a black shadow creeping up the stairs. Lee walked down the stairs a bit and stopped.
"Who's there?" Lee asked in a deeper voice, trying to be intimidating. The shape turned its head upwards and then hung it. The shadow moved slowly up the stairs and Lee brought the bat back, ready to swing. Kit ducked away from the direction he was going to be swinging. The figure moved closer and closer to Lee and he swung the bat. The shadow jumped back in reaction to it and held up its hands as if it was surrendering.
"Babe it's just me! Don't hit me!" Will's voice came from the darkness in a whisper. Lee rolled his eyes and dropped the bat down to his side.
"I was this close to beating the gay out of you, you know that?" Lee said to Will, walking back to his room. Will and Kit followed after him. Lee walked into his room and dropped the bat on the floor and laid down on his bed. He slowly shifted, slinking underneath the covers of his bed.
Kit laid down on the floor which, for the time, was her only bed. Will slowly walked over near Lee's bed and crawled underneath the comforter with Lee.
Another hour passed and there was sound again, moving above the kids, not downstairs this time. Like something was being dragged. The sound was continuous, like someone who was awake would hear it and think there was someone up there. Kit rustled in her sleep at the sound. Her subconscious could hear something and wanted her to get up.
Slowly, Kit was awakened by the sound, as was Lee. Kit sat up and her eyes adjusted to the darkness again. She stood up and walked towards the door quietly, not knowing Lee was awake. Kit walked slowly across the dark room but accidentally kicked the bat that Lee had dropped earlier into the leg of a nearby table. Kit felt the tension fall on her and she waited to see if Lee or Will would wake up. She stood in silence waiting for someone to say anything and heard a small 'psst' come from the bed. Kit turned towards the bed and squinted in the darkness to see Lee's head slightly pick up.
