"Does it still hurt?" Cassidy asked Kit. They were both sitting up on the floor. Kit had pulled her knees up to her chest and Cassidy was sitting criss-cross.
"No," she said, watching the breeze from the night sway the curtains to the balcony. The only light came through the glass doors to the balcony. The street lights cast soft shadows on their faces. Kit protested when Cassidy wanted to turn the lights on because she didn't want him to notice her crying.
"Do you love him?" Cassidy asked and Kit looked back at Cassidy.
"I-I did." It broke Kit to say that, realizing the truth that there was no more spark. Kit realized that if he was going to keep going back to Jess, he wasn't worth the fight. The tiresome carousel of missing him and wishing she had never trusted him was too much for Kit to bear. The empty promises and the lies.
"I know I'm a bastard, but you can talk to me." Do you wanna let it out?" Cassidy asked. Kit's anger was bubbling inside of her, but she felt soft.
"You're not a bastard," she said, looking up at him. Her head was rested on her knees so her so their eyes did not meet. There was a pause in Kit because she didn't know if she wanted to tell CC, of all people, how she felt. But she just couldn't contain herself anymore. "You know what, I do," Kit stood up. "He's a hot-head, stupid-looking, narcissist! If I had a guy friend who wasn't gay, he'd beat them up, just for talking to me! I don't know what the hell he's trying to prove. I'm not weak. I don't need a bodyguard, I want a friend. Now I don't even want that! It's like I'm allergic to him, everytime I think about it, it makes me upset. Besides, he's always going out with Jess and she's just manipulating him. I wouldn't even care if he didn't always lie about it!" Cassidy stood up and Kit started pacing. "And what is it with him and Jess anyways? Does he just keep her around to piss me off? 'Cause it's really working!" Shawn landed back on the balcony and shyly walked back into the room. Kit was facing away from him when he tried to speak.
"I-" he was cut off.
"I don't know what it is about him that makes me need him so much. I wish I didn't because every time I see him it pisses me off. If Shawn was here right now I'd slap him so hard across his stupid face, he wouldn't have any face left!" Kit shouted. She turned around to see Shawn standing behind Cassidy. Kit's face turned red and became hot.
"So is that what you want? You tiny, weak, little girl slap my face off?" Shawn yelled and walked over to a slightly embarrassed Kit. "Do it, hit me. I fucking dare you!" Shawn demanded, leaning down.
"Shawn that's not a good idea," Cassidy said, remembering the last time he crossed Kit.
"Shut the hell up, CC!" Shawn yelled and Kit flinched. He asked for it. Kit pulled back an open palm and slapped Shawn so hard, he fell backwards and hit the floor. He had a shocked expression on his face, and Cassidy was in awe. Kit walked over to Cassidy and wrapped her arms around his waist. Cassidy held Kit close to him and stared at Shawn.
"I'm not weak," Kit said and Shawn stood up holding his cheek. Her face was tucked behind CC's arm. She was still shaking.
"Just keep in mind, Kitlyn; I'm not getting Love for you," Shawn said, leaving through the window like before.
"What did he mean by 'getting love for me'?" Kit asked Cassidy, her face still pressed into his chest.
"Nothing, he's just trying to be tough," CC said, nervously. Another crashing sound came from downstairs. Kit flinched again and looked up at CC. She hadn't noticed before but her right hand was on his chest. Kit could feel his heartbeat quicken when she looked into his eyes. The air between them swirled with crimson heat and the idea of baby-pink kisses. Cassidy felt his face become hot. "You should get some sleep." He said and Kit nodded. She climbed into the bed while Cassidy laid down on the blanket on the floor.
