Aj walked towards the recording room, pausing and smiling before turning the knob and entering the room. The only light that was on was the ceiling light over the mixer. Taeyeon sat on the corner of the mixer, looking at her phone. Her brown eyes met his as he stepped inside and they both shared a smile.
"Someone's here early." He said cheerily. Taeyeon stood up and placed her phone in her back pocket, her bright smile still on her face.
"The early bird gets the worm." She replied. She and Aj stood there silently, smiling at each other until Aj suddenly blushed and looked down. He moved his satchel from his shoulder and set it next to the sofa on the wall.
"Let's begin, yeah?" He asked, walking to the recording booth. He opened the door and gestured for Taeyeon to enter.
"After you, milady." He joked. Taeyeon snickered and curtsied.
"Thank you, milord." She said as she entered. Aj closed the door and sat behind the mixer while Taeyeon placed the headphones on her ears.
Aj leaned over the mixer and pressed a button.
"Remember what I told you. Light and soft. Not too airy. Make sure to relax; when you relax, the listener relaxes." Taeyeon nodded and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. When she opened her eyes, she met Aj's. She looked down and smiled.
"I'm ready." She said, loudly enough for Aj to hear through the microphone. Aj nodded and manipulated a couple buttons and knobs. Soft music began to play and fill the room. The brunette closed her eyes, grabbed the microphone, and leaned towards it. Aj kept his eyes on her, listening critically.
The thing I suddenly remembered was your smile
I keep trying to erase it but it just gets clearer
Aj leaned back as Taeyeon's melodic voice filled the room. He smiled as he could feel her emotions into every word she sang.
Love
All of the stories we shared together
Now they are in the past
Aj sat up and began to press some more buttons, increasing and decreasing things, altering the music.
Set me free, let me be
Let me go so I can rest for a moment
Set me free, let me be
This isn't right, like a fool, I keep laughing
The instrumental continued, but as Taeyeon opened her mouth to sing the next verse, a swift beep filled the room. Aj frowned and looked up to see Taeyeon singing like normal, except he couldn't hear her. As his eyes went to the microphone, he chuckled. He stopped the music and stood up. Taeyeon, confused by the music's sudden end, watched the blonde as he opened the booth's door.
"You turned off the mic while you were holding it." He explained as he stood next to her. He looked at the microphone and kept on glancing at the brunette.
"What?" Taeyeon asked softly as she kept her eyes on him. Aj blushed as he looked back at the microphone.
"Your hand is still on the mic. I need to turn it back on." Taeyeon blushed as she removed her hand from the microphone and held her hand behind her back.
Aj flicked a switch on the end of the microphone and began to walk away.
"Aj." Taeyeon called. The blonde stopped and turned around to meet eyes with the brunette. The brunette looked unsure for a moment, but something passed her eyes. Something that reminded Aj like resolution.
"Can you sing the chorus again? I don't feel like I'm singing it correctly." She admitted. Aj smiled, almost nervously.
"Tae, you're doing great. You sang it really well-"
"But not well enough." The brunette interrupted. Aj's gaze lowered as he took a deep breath. He looked back at the brunette, who was waiting patiently. Aj walked shyly towards the microphone and bent down a bit, as both Taeyeon and the microphone were shorter than him. He cleared his throat and stared at the booth's clear screen.
Set me free, let me be
Let me go so I can rest for a moment
Set me free, let me be
This isn't right, like a fool, I keep laughing
His voice, though a bit raspy from not warming up, was soft and velvety. It filled the room even though he sang quietly and filled Taeyeon's heart with emotion. No one could sing quite like Aj. His voice was unique. Strong, and lovely. Full, and quiet. It was not too harsh or too airy. It was just enough of everything. If only his father...
Aj stood up straight after finishing the chorus. His hands were shaking slightly from the rush he felt when he sang, and he knew he should stop before he would do something daring.
Again, he began to walk out of the booth when he felt a slight tug on his lower shirt.
"Why is my tutor afraid to sing when he has such a beautiful voice?" Taeyeon asked. Aj slowly turned around.
"Tae...please don't bring this up again-"
"Why? You're your own person. Your father, no matter how powerful he is, should not have this much control over you." She said strongly, despite her soft grip on his shirt.
"It's not only my father, Tae." He muttered. She walked closer, maintaining strict eye contact with the blonde. Aj tried to look away, but that didn't stop the brunette from moving his head to face her and strengthening her grip on his shirt. Her warm hand held his cheek in place and forced Aj to look at her.
"Then what is stopping you?" She asked. A thick silence stood filled the air after her question before Aj noticed their position. Unknowingly, Taeyeon had pulled Aj closer to her and her soft hand on his cheek wasn't helping him concentrate on how they became so close in a matter of seconds. Suddenly, Aj's heart leaped as Taeyeon slowly began to lift up on her toes.
Was she...
Taeyeon's eyes traveled from Aj's gorgeous brown eyes to his soft, pink lips. Her racing heartbeat and warm breath matched his and somehow, she knew they both wanted this. They both did not want this moment to stop. Why else would Aj look at her lips too?
Just before their lips brushed against each other, there was a thump at the door. They both separated from each other and stood awkwardly as Soohyun walked in, laughing and shoving Daehoon.
"Stop pushing me. It's not my fault you-" Daehoon laughed as he talked, but paused as he spotted the two in the room.
"Oh, hey Aj. Good afternoon, Taeyeon." Daehoon greeted. Soohyun smiled and greeted them both. Soohyun greeted them and grinned while the latter sat in Aj's seat.
"Wow, you guys must be intent on Taeyeon's comeback; you're here early." He said as he placed his hands in his pockets and sat in the chair next to Daehoon. Aj nervously laughed and scratched the back of his neck.
"Gotta get the job done." He replied. Daehoon smirked at him knowingly. Aj saw this and walked over to the brunette, jokingly shoving the latter out of his seat and into another.
"Alright," The blonde sighed as he looked back at Taeyeon, who had regained her original position in front of the mic, and smiled with a quick thumbs up. He pressed a button on the mixer and spoke.
"Let's get this done."
Taeyeon smiled and stuck a thumb up, allowing the blonde to cue the music. As Taeyeon sang, Aj couldn't wipe off the wide grin on his face and neither could Taeyeon.
