I led the way inside glancing back at Bey as she typed away on her cell phone before staring up at me when she noticed me looking.

"You one of them phone-a-holics, huh?"

She snapped down her cellphone "I was texting my parents my whereabouts."

"Shoot! Don't tell me you still got a curfew." I teased as she only stared confirming what I assumed. "Hell nah!" I laughed as I looked around at all the games and rides they had set up; we ain't have this type of shit in the city.

"What's so funny?"

"You!" I answered while walking off to go pay for a game before playing—throwing darts at colorful balloons that hung across a wall as paint spilled from each one once hit with a dart.

"Hey, that looks pretty cool, let me try." Bey interrupted.

I stepped aside as the dude behind the counter handed her a pile of darts, so she could start "So you how old again?" I made small talk watching the way her body looked as she bent to throw.

"I don't recall telling you in the first place."

"Oh! It's like that, huh?"

"And it will always be." she answered then threw another dart.

"You know for you to be a preacher's kid, you sure is mean, that ain't very holy of you."

"Growing up here you have to be mean or else people try taking advantage of you," she said with her eyes now squinted in concentration as she threw another dart.

"This is Texas what do y'all do here besides wrestle pigs and have pie-eating contests."

"Where you from? Because I'm sure there are dozens of stereotypes that are attached to wherever that is." she chuckled "and don't let Hollywood fool you, living in Texas ain't that simple especially out here in Houston."

"Well, shoot! Could've fooled me." I mumbled while staring around the crowded fair as I saw a snack stand and went over. "Lemme get a bag of the mixed kernel and one of them candy apples," I told him as I heard a coughing noise over my shoulder "-uh make that two candy apples."

"Please let this be the green one... it is! Ooh!! These are the best ones." Bey said before chewing into the treat.

"Never seen someone get so excited from eating an apple before." I teased.

She rolled her eyes and took another bite.

"These are the best thing about fairs."

"So how long your old man been preaching?" I asked; switching the topic.

"Since I was inside my mama, hmm, but knowing him it was probably longer than that some people just got a gift for that sorta stuff."

"What about you?"

"Me?" She pointed to herself with a cute expression on her face as I nodded. "Oh! Ion know bout all that... girl pastors aren't really taking all that serious; I was thinking I'd just become a nurse as my parents want-"

"Do you do everything your parents tell you to?"

"Of course, the bible says; a disobedient child, days shall be few."

"Well, is there anything you wanna do? Cuz me I know I always wanted to try bungee jumping." I admitted.

She laughed, "when I was younger, I always wanted to climb a mountain."

"Oh hell nah! Black people don't do that type of sh-"

"Why do you do that?"

"What?" I stared confusedly.

"Swear so much!"

"Ion know I mean I guess it's just how I was raised. Growing up in the environment I did my parents used to do it a lot so it kinda rubbed off."

"You never told me where you were from?"

"Brooklyn, New York."

"Oh! Then that explains it."

I just grinned not knowing was that good or bad. She stood from the bench we were seated to go empty the candy apple stick and paper towel in the trash. Then I followed doing the same.

I thought I'd try my luck, one more time at one of the games they had set up. Winning each round and I got to pick out a prize; I chose a purple bear. "Uh, I know this ain't a date or nothing like that but I didn't wanna see you go home empty-handed so here."

She took the bear then smiled at me. "My favorite color, how'd you know? Thanks."

Damn, she was so sexy, but it wasn't hard to tell that she was super guarded and shy usually ion like girls that are like this but it was something about her that made me want to continue the chase; she was just too damn beautiful not to.

We played a few more games before leaving as I rode around, and she talked about all the places we passed like her old high school for instance.

"Oh! I know they ain't playing Kirk Franklin this late." she said with a smile before turning up the radio and singing along; her voice was like the sound of the ocean, "come on sing along!"

"I- uh," I grumbled before mumbling along—I pretended to know the words, and she was too into the song to even notice I didn't know.

Luckily we made it back to her crib before her curfew.

"See you at church Sunday..." she waved bye.

"Bye!" I mumbled, watching as she ran up the small stairway to her house. Looking over I noticed she left the bear in the passenger seat. She was already inside, so I guess I had to wait until Sunday to return it to her.
