Tucson, Arizona.
You could still smell the stench of smoke from across the street, here at Haven-Rock motel and I didn't know why it became much more prevalent at night.
I moved down the dimly green-lit hallways until I got to the elevators that took me up to the lobby.
Tameka had her face buried in a gossip magazine and didn't bother to look up from it when I walked on by. She spoke: "Extra bed sheets needed in room 3b."
"Why didn't you let me know that before I came up here?"
"Probably because I didn't too long ago find out my goddamn self." She retorted as I headed back towards the elevator and down to the basement for more bedsheets. I grabbed a pile of folded ones from the supply closet then locked the door.
Turning on my heels I noticed two black trucks drive up in the parking lot from the surveillance cameras in the office room I was currently in, three men hopped out of them with their large guns.
I instantly dropped the bed sheets and raced upstairs with nothing but a switchblade. I knew it was no match for the gun-toting men, but it was better than going out there empty-handed.
"Tameka! Lock the doors!!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. "Lock the fucking doors, Ta-" I got up to the main floor. It was quiet. Nothing but a dripping sound was heard.
Tameka was no longer behind the front desk. I went over checking before grabbing the keys and racing over to lock the double glass doors that were the entryway inside the main building. Just as I was doing so a shadow appeared as Tameka smacked against the door with blood all over her. She then fell to the ground outside, taking her final breath.
A man stood not too far from her with his eyes now set on me.
I ran for my life up to the stairs and started banging on the doors of the motel rooms for someone to help. No one answered, so I charged forward into a vacant room and hid inside one of the closets holding my breath.
I heard a speaking voice that sounded like Ms. Prinsloo from room 3b. Then a loud bang then another and another. Finally, everything went quiet as I stood and sped over to the window.
"Shoot him!" the room door burst open and the man stood there, ordering his guys to kill me.
I felt the flesh tear from my limbs causing every part of me to burn as I fell through the glass window. And over the banister, until I was down in the parking lot.
Face against the cold hard ground.
I clawed the gravel and pulled myself forward trying to escape, but a sharp pain stabbed through me as the world as I knew it flashed before me. I felt my eyes getting heavier. With what little strength I mustered I flipped myself over and watched the moon for the last time tonight.
There in the darkest shade of blue stood a light beaming so brightly.
