"You aren't going to believe this case we got here." my partner Gage said as he tossed a thin manila file onto my rosewood desk.

I finished sipping on my Folger's coffee as he just stared down at me with tiny gray eyes waiting for me to open it.

Eventually, I did and my mouth curled up at the pictures inside of two dead men and a dead girl who looked to be no older than 10. "They believe these murders are somehow linked?" I read the investigation documents inside.

"I know," he answered as I peeked up at him. And he was pacing the area. "Though one of the victims was left for dead outside. Two of the victims were found in the same building..."

"Let me guess the dead girl and this guy here."

"Correct!" he replied as I read the next page.

"This is a triple homicide. We never got put on one of these cases before–why is Deputy Stewart trusting us suddenly?" This was serious stuff, sure we were all trained, some of us more than others. But getting something this serious so early in my career was really a moment.

"Don't act blinded," he told me then took the seat on the other side of my desk.

"What do you mean? How am I acting bli–" I stared as he tapped his pale hand than did the same to the victims in the pictures who were all darker—Black. He laughed after while fixing his uniform. Deputy Stewart gave us this case because of their race I refused to believe it was true. "Hey, don't think like that."

He shook his head. "Well, according to this document we've got a lead. Apparently a bloody footprint of the popular footwear Air Jordan. Was left in one of the hallways leading out the bathroom where the dead kid was found."

"Air Jordan?"

"Yes, size 11."

"You thinking what I'm thinking?" I muttered with a plan already brewing.

Gage Brown could be quite the handful sometimes, but he and I were meant to be partners. When I got desk duty, he was the only one out of everyone that didn't tease me even though I deserved it, especially after I drove my car through a theater on a wild speed chase.

Nobody got injured and in my defense, I didn't see the damn place my focus was on chasing down the bad guy.

"I'm driving." Gage made clear as I took the passenger seat, and we headed to the first location on the long list we had printed.

"We don't sell that size."

"The wrong store."

"We're closed!"

Were among the many things we heard after visiting several shoe stores around Brooklyn, I was growing tired of crossing out places on this list of ours.

We were now down to 4 more places.

I followed Gage inside as a petite redhead greeted us at the glass door.

"Is there a problem?" She questioned us when we were the ones supposed to be doing all the questioning.

Gage told her everything she needed to know—so she led us to the back of the Footlocker store and allowed us to look over some paperwork and at old surveillance videos.

Of course, that got tiring we were in there for hours.

"What is with everyone and this shoe?" I mumbled after looking over the prices and sells; there was no way I'd spend that much on a lousy shoe—a sneaker at that.

"Got it!" Gage shouted as I stood hurriedly as a wide smile graced his soft features.

"Well..."

He looked at me with the most dumbfounded look ever in history on his face, I'm sure of it.

"What?"

"Well, who's the killer?!"

"I don't know."

"Then why did you say 'got it' if you didn't h–you know what? Don't talk until you actually have it." I gritted then went over to the surveillance screen. Instantly, I noticed the same few customers had returned months after their first payments. So I dwindled down on whom these people were by zooming in on each of their appearances.

The first customer was a lady with two small kids, so I wrote her off for obvious reasons–why would she be buying size 11 in men when she has two small boys? And I continued through each returning customer like this until I got down to a few individuals and everything started to make sense.

"I think I'm onto something," Gage said.

"If it's anything, like before... save it," I answered while rewinding the old surveillance video to this tall guy who had a haircut and wore baggy clothes.

He was a reoccurring customer here I noticed that, so I zoomed in on what shoe he was buying– lo & behold it was Air Jordan.

Sweat trickled down my forehead as I paused the frame to print out the picture. Then I called the employee back in as she appeared irritated with us still being in here.

"Who is this?" I asked her anyway as she folded her arms before sucking her teeth.

"If I tell you will, y'all hurry and leave? It's kinda hard tryna gain customers with a cop car parked out front."

Gage and I glanced at one another then both nodded.

"Yeah!"

She stepped over her high heel sneakers clicking on the tile floor. "This is... uh... dang! Let me think um this is the shoe fanatic Jay. He always comin' up in here tryna spit game on me. But I tol' him straight up that I was taken, so what he did?"

"It's confidential."

"Confidential! Is that you honkies way of telling me to mind my business?"

"He killed people." I revealed as Gage stared at me with a shocked expression since I gave her the details "Innocent people... small child included."

She popped her gum. "Damnnn! That's crazy but shit it's just another day in the hood."

And that ladies & gentlemen is how we begin our 70-day chase to track down a suspect and make him pay for these acts of injustice.
