Beyoncé Knowles.
My satchel was flung on my arm before I left my bedroom for the kitchen. Where mom stood over the stove and dad sat at the table with his reading glasses tilted as he read the good book.
I went by kissing his cheek as he grabbed hold of my wrist. Then motioned for me to read the bible verse he had highlighted as I glanced at him before doing that.
John 4:18
There is no fear in love but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."Do you know what that means?" He asked while adjusting his reading glasses. I stood upright shaking my head in a no. Zendaya stomped into the kitchen in combat boots, baggy camouflage pants, and a black Hollister shirt. That her long brown hair drizzled over.
We were headed to the lake which was what most kids around here did when the days grew hot.
Mom glared at Z as she sat two plates out onto the round table. "What happened to the dress I brought you?"
"Nothing, Why?"
"Sweetie, you look like a boy, go change into the dress I bought?" Mom decided as she sat and Z left the kitchen.
I had breakfast while waiting for her to change clothes-smearing jelly on my toast and taking a huge bite.
"I want you to find out the meaning of that verse for me," Dad said now closing the bible. He set it aside then clasped his long hands together to pray over the warm meal.
Z returned in a floral dress that stopped above her knees she looked pretty but very uncomfortable. It was a funny sight.
I couldn't remember the last time I saw her in a dress.
"There! You look like a beautiful young lady now." mom complimented.
"Can we go?"
"Sure!" I replied before pinching off one last piece of toast and stuffing it into my mouth as I waved my parents goodbye before following Z out the door.
"This is so embarrassing," she grumbled, getting onto her bike and leading the way to the lake. The sky was bright blue, not a cloud in sight. Every lawn we went by was newly mowed and green, till we got over the train tracks-the grass, faded into dingy yellows and trash-filled the streets.
It wasn't at all crowded as it usually was at the Lake. When we got there, we chained our bikes then went to find ourselves a comfortable spot underneath the sun. I heard my name being called as I looked around to see Bryshere laying out in a chair near a group of guys.
"Aye! Bey over here."
I walked over with Z not too far behind, Bryshere lowered his dark shades to his nose as he eyeballed us.
"What?"
"Jay will be here in a minute until then relax and have a drink!" he said then motioned towards the blue cooler that sat next to a radio that blasted rap music from each speaker.
"Who said I was here for Jay?" I sassed.
Z went overtaking a can of soda from the cooler than cracked it open taking a sip. "Who is Jay?"
"Nobody." I retorted as Bryshere just laughed.
"Look! He told me if I saw the prettiest girl here to call her over so... would you mind going to tap that girl over there shoulder for me." he pointed over to the two girls who laid out on beach towels in the grass.
