"Some women fear the fire,
Some women simply become it." — r.h sin~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An athlete's worse fear was probably injuries, the insecurity of not being able to play.
The wind blew on the field, the mowed grass seemed lush because of the good weather. My teammates ran some rounds, warming up. I clutched my water bottle in hand and hiked up my duffel bag on my shoulder. It was heavy with some of my equipment.
My hair was tied in a high pony tail, I was clad in some black Adidas shorts and I loose black t-shirt. Goosebumps rose on my skin as a gust of cold air blew on me. Should've worn sweatpants.
"Hey Taï!" A girl named Cassidy called out to me, a huge smile on her face as she walked closer.
"What's up?" I asked her, mirroring her happy expression as she held my hands while jumping up and down.
"You're going to be the quarterback for the West Chest High game!" Said the pretty brunette, her eyes twinkling in excitement. Did I hear her right?
"Come again, Cassidy?" I questioned her again because I couldn't believe my ears.
"You're the freaking quarterback for the West Chest game!" She repeated this time she hugged me and I hugged her back. Oh my God, I was really going to be the quarterback?! That couldn't possibly be right? I mean I did work my butt off for this but woah!
A grin took over me and I started jumping up and down. Oh my God!
We finally went to stretch out our muscles that were still sore from the practise two days ago. I sat down on the vibrant grass and started warming up for this hardcore training coach was going to put us through. Pulling a muscle was the last damn thing I needed. Or maybe it was a cat call that wreaked of testosterone...
I could just feel the ego and cockiness from here. Since I was facing my back to the source of the call, I see my team mates that were facing me were borderline starstruck. I swear, were two days before the biggest game of the season and I do not need some random people disturbing my practise.
I got up quickly, making sure I didn't fall and turned around swiftly. I saw a couple of guys, most smirking and checking the team out. Don't tell me they were from the co-Ed school next to ours, they were always trouble. Don't even get me started on our century long rivalry.
I then took a better look at the guys, my eyes throwing daggers as I scanned through. One was blond with light brown eyes and he wore a prominent smirk as he shamelessly checked out Cassidy who was a little behind me where she made sure the team got back to practise. The one next to him was shorter compared to his friends, he had mischievous hazel eyes and dark brown hair that had some blond highlights, he threw a wink to one the receivers that was tying up her shoes. The other guy was a brunet with electric dark blue eyes, he appeared to be the one with the most decency as he took interest in the grass below. Finally, my eyes locked with a gaze so dark and unfaltering that I felt as if the wind had been knocked out of me. Calling his eyes dark brown would've been an understatement.
I hadn't realized that I was only a few feet away from them. And him. I could feel his gaze burn through me as I folded my arms over my chest. They seemed a little too old to be in high school but I had more important things to focus on here. Like shoving their egos the size of Africa up their butthole.
