I walked up to the shared bedroom and plopped down on my bed. I bet by now your wondering why we were in our social workers house instead of a foster home. Well, Kate told us that she's seen what the foster system can do to a kid and she told us that if it cleared with her boss, we could stay with her. Her boss, having been through the foster system, said it was fine. So here we are. Living with Kate for now. Emphasis on for now. Kate has been looking for a good home for us. A perminant one.

I closed my eyes and tried to think of the things I loved. My dog, My cat, The garden back home, swimming, and most of all, summer. I was almost asleep when Missy climbed up onto my bed and curled up next to my belly. I pulled my knees up and stroked her from ears to tail. Missy is an 8 month old kitten that my mom got for me. She got her when she was 6 weeks old. She was still pretty small. Still a kitten really.

She purred and closed her eyes as I curled into a protective ball around her. I closed my eyes and drifted off.

********************************

I woke up when Kate opened the door. She stuck her head in as I sat up. Missy curled closer to the lingering warmth and Kate gestured for me to come with her. Nodding, I scooped Missy into my arms and walked down the stairs. She was seated at her laptop and on the screen were a horse and large pony. The screen showed a website for Willow Woods Horse Ranch. Confused I approached her.

"Shasta, you and Melody are gonna go away for a while. I've signed you up to go to Willow Woods Ranch. You leave tomorrow." She said.

"What?! You can't be serious!" I shout.

"I'm very serious. You leave for Tennessee tomorrow morning." she calmly replies.

" You can't honestly think that this smelly creature is the answer to my problems. Your insane. I am NOT going to Tennessee and you can't force me to! I'm FINE!" I shout louder than before.

"You're not fine! You mope around the place, You snap at everyone if they bring up anything about your parents, and you have been suspended 3 times in the last month! You're going and that's final! I don't care if I have to drag you onto that plane myself. You don't have a choice anymore!"

"Well if YOUR parents were killed a  month ago, you would be pretty messed up too!" I yell so loud my throat hurts.

She sighs once before she says, "Go pack your things. You're staying all summer. It'll help. you'll see."

"Yeah right." I mutter, walking away with Missy still in my arms.

Stomping up the stairs, I curse Kate under my breath and stomp into my room. Melody sits up when I walk in. I set Missy on my bed and walk over to the closet. I huff as I pull down my suitcases and then yank Melody's down as well. Pulling mine over to my bed, I walk to the dresser and pull out all of my clothes and pack them in my large suitcase. Then, I go to the closet and pull out my half of the clothes and stuff them into my little suit case.

"I'm NOT talking to any quacks while I'm there!" I shout to Kate.

"What?" Melody says. "Where are you going?"

"We. Where are we going. And We are being sent to Tennessee to some stupid horse ranch," I pause before shouting the end, "Because Kate is being insane!"

"She didn't even ask us? That's not fair. Is that even legal?!" she says loudly.

"I know." I sigh.

I finish packing and go downstairs to grab our laundry from the laundry room. I walk back upstairs and I groan in annoyance as Kate comes into view. Sitting on my bed.

"The two of you need to cut it out. You act as if its the end of the world." She says sternly.

"Well we wouldn't have to act this way if you would've talked to us first." I fire back.

"I didn't talk to you because I knew you would react this way!"

Whatever. I think to myself.

I fold the clothes in the basket and pack them in our bags. Melody sighs and I pack Sephira's leash and Missy's cat toy. Finally everything is packed including all of my toiletries.

"Dinner!" Kate yelled from the bottom of the stairs.

"Come on Shasta let's go." My little sisters innocent grey eyes are looking up at me. I take her hand and together we walk down the stairs.
