Hey sorry this is a sort of depressing story. I promise it will get happier! This story is mainly focused on Jesse. My next story will be thrown between the twins multiple times. I want to tell you guys that the end of this chapter and the next one will probably be your favorites! It'll be worth the read.
Olivia was heartbroken about the news, and surprisingly, Axel was too. Axel was never a fan of Lukas. They were never really close friends and tended to argue. Axel still missed him though. Jesse filled them in on her idea of writing to Lukas once they returned to Beacontown. The town was now more populated and beautiful than before Colossus (the Admin) wrecked it.
Everybody took turns writing and Carson approached Jesse, "I was wondering if I could stay here in Beacontown. Your town is absolutely breathtaking." Jesse gave him a confused glance, "Of course, but don't you have family or anyone you want to let know your'e safe first?"
He shook his head, "They don't care what I do. I haven't seen them in years." Jesse felt bad for him, but he didn't seem to care, "Oh, I'm sorry." He shrugged, "I don't mind, I have new friends." He smiled at her, "I'll go take a look at some of the houses." He walked away, whistling.
"We all wrote in it." Jesse turned to see Axel extending the book and pen to her. Jesse took it, "Thanks. I know he would've appreciated it. Did you have much to say?"
Axel kicked a rock, staring at the ground, "Some. As you know, we weren't exactly 'buddy buddy'." He said with air quotations, "But I kind of feel bad about that. The last thing I said to him was something along the lines of, 'if Jesse gets hurt, I will kill you.'" He face palmed and continued, "To be honest, I could care less about his books, but he really was a hero. That could have been you! If I lost you, I'd be really upset. I wish I could have thanked him. Also, I didn't actually hate him. Now I'll need to find a new person to cushion my fall whenever we go on adventures." Jesse laughed, "Good to know. I really wondered if you two would ever bond. It seems to me like there was a lot you wanted to say to him."
Axel smiled, "Yeah, I guess so. I'll let you go unpack. See you later Jesse, let me know if you need anything." Jesse nodded and waved as he walked away. Instead of going to her house, she decided to go to the Order Hall. Once she got inside she walked to an empty spot and placed the book from the rest of the Order of the Stone there. She turned to the next spot, holding the crutch that she promised Lukas she'd put on display. She looked down at it and burst into tears, "Oh Lukas, I don't know if I can do this without you? How am I supposed to tell everybody that you're gone? Everyone loves you!" She dropped to her knees, "I love you," She mumbled and tightened her grip on the crutch crying to herself. Jesse heard the entrance door open and shut. She sniffed and quickly wiped her tears. She stood up off of the floor and turned to see Carson standing there. He approached her, "Is now a bad time?"
"N-no, I'm just thinking." He pulled her into a hug, "These will really help you feel better, trust me." She accepted the hug, realizing that what he said was true, "Thanks," They separated and Carson some of his messy dirty blonde hair out of his face, "I think I found the house I want. It's next to yours. It's very nice."
Jesse blinked. I don't remember showing him where my house is. Oh well, I guess someone else told him. "Okay, sounds good. You can talk to Radar about that. He sells the houses here. He should be at the courthouse you saw when we first came into Beacontown."
Carson nodded, "Thanks, you have no idea how badly I want running water and soap right now." Jesse laughed, "Yeah no kidding. You were stuck down there for two weeks!" Carson exhaled, "Yeah. I was wondering if you could take me on a tour of Beacontown tomorrow." Jesse nodded, "Of course I can. I'd be some sucky mayor if I made you figure this whole place out by yourself. What time?" He smiled, "Will five work? And maybe some food afterwords?" He gave her a hopeful glance. She smiled, "Sounds good. I'll catch you later."
"Okay thanks. I'm looking forward to it," Carson said, "Let me know if you need anything. I'll be right next door." They waved to each other and he left the room. Jesse pulled out the crutch once again and glanced at the empty spot on the display case that she was about to place it. I'll just hold on to it for a little bit longer. She thought, Oh no! Lukas' pets! I should go take care of them no matter how hard it will be to see his things all over the place.
She went to Lukas' little wooden house. It had a nice porch that Jesse would often find him writing at. She went to the horse's stable. She approached the midnight black horse as it neighed in delight to see her. She placed a hand on the side of its neck, stroking it. "Sorry buddy. Lukas isn't coming home." She put her forehead against its forehead and started to cry. The horse neighed sadly, it didn't know what she said, but could tell that Jesse was upset. It tried to comfort her by nuzzling Jesse's cheek. Jesse laughed, "Thanks for understanding. Let me get you some food, I bet you're hungry. I'll take care of you from now on." She fed and said goodbye to the stallion and went inside to find Lukas' ocelot. Jesse knew how much Lukas loved ocelots.
It rubbed against her legs and she picked it up and sat on Lukas' bed, setting it on her lap. It got cozy and purred against her thighs. She leaned onto her back, Legs still dangling off the edge. She felt as the cozy mattress relieved her sore muscles from sleeping on solid rock for days. The ocelot moved up to her stomach demanding attention. She smiled and stroked its soft fur.
"I've been trying so hard to stay strong without you here, but it keeps backfiring," She said to nobody, "Turns out, Axel doesn't hate you, crazy, right?" Laughing while crying, she continued, "Almost as crazy as the girl bawling while talking to herself. I guess that's what would happen to somebody who lost their best friend. Maybe even someone who was meant to be more than a best friend." She sighed, "Unfortunately, no matter how much I regret what happened, it won't bring you back." She continued to talk of her regrets and sadness until she fell asleep. Her sleep was peaceful. The first night since the accident that she actually fell asleep. It might have been because she wasn't sleeping on rocks, but it was probably more of the fact that his bed smelled like him. Cologne and leather.
She could hear his voice in her sleep, it sounded distant, and barely audible, "I've missed you so much!" She couldn't see anything other than darkness. She heard a pleasant neigh and laughing. His laugh that she missed so much. Then, she heard the door open followed by footsteps that suddenly halted. What is with this dream? It feels so real!
She slowly opened her eyes.
