Scooping the last spoonful of steamy broth into my mouth, cringing at the taste of stale vegetables. I walk over to the sink and rinse my dirty bowl ready for breakfast tomorrow.
The sunset creeps in from the edges of one of the blackouts in the window, I immediately walk over to admire the beautiful sunset for a second, then stick it back down with some glue that had been resting on the windowsill.
I miss being able to lay down on my blanket in the back garden, looking up at the sky and watch it change from baby blue to Pinks, Oranges, yellows and reds.
I would stay out there for hours watching the sky grow darker and then gaze at the stars, imagining what it would be like to shine that bright. My mother used to shout me to come in but I wouldn't move, so she used to tie back her long golden hair and physically drag me inside.
I'd stare into her hazel eyes intimidatingly then poke my tongue out like a five year old, that always made her giggle. We used to be so close she was my best friend and we looked more like twins than mother and daughter.
BANG. My smile fades just like my sweet memory. BANG. I grab my baseball bat from the wooden coffee table in front of me, I slowly walk to the hallway door. BANG. My heart pounds and fear rushes through my veins. I reach for the other door leading into the spare room. BANG. I reach my arm out and touch the handle gently , I breathe deeply and push it down. The doors ajar and a putrid smell of rotten flesh crawls into my nostrils knocking me sick to the stomach.
I push the door hard and it slams against the wall, and raise my bat quickly about to swing at the dark figure next to the open window. "I'm human" I hesitate but lower my bat "quickly come into the hallway" he does as I say and I lock the door. "We need to barricade it" he smiles and rips up two floor boards.
