It must be hard to believe that things could get harder than it already was. But that was my life now. The man who took me into his remaining abode, had sepereated from me merely years after birth, whether he's dead or not, I do not know. But that leads to the rest of the my story.
Gunshots. In this distorted, twisted world, the noise signalled that there was either an invasion or an unfortunate wanderer mistake for a trespasser. Although on the rare occasion, it would be a scavenger rummaging through the remaining food collected after "The End".
I don't know about you, but that isn't my favorite wake-up-call. I came to when a woman howled in pain, in the distance, after every couple shots a scream would emerge. Noticing that they were getting closer, I threw myself out of the mattress, and reached for the kitchen knife upon the pile of rubble. Taking hold of the hilt, I clutched it close to my body.
Before I continue, I would like to note that it was always my priority to plan an escape route, just in case. This has happened before, in several other groups that I have been in. However I managed to escape the fighting every time, from sheer luck. It was important for anyone who lived, to know what to do, and to be prepared for it. I took hold of the bedsheet and wedged myself between the plank on the wall that covered my escape route, blocking it from visibility with the bedsheet.
As I made way to the light above, I remebered that I was forgetting Celestine. She was just a girl. A pretty awesome girl! You know not that I care if she's pretty, or charming, or bewitching. But that's aside from the point, she was still in her room, and if we were being invaded she wouldn't stand a chance.
Making my way back through the narrow tunnel. I peeked my head outside the empty door frame, noting there wasn't anyone there yet, I made my way down the dark, dusty hall. But i noticed the screams and yelling drew nearer everystep. Even though I could be risking my life for a dead cause, I go by a saying; "Never leave a friend behind."
With that said, I snuck into the hall down to her door. Without knocking, I quickly flung the door open, immediatly regretting it. She was still alive, nor were there any assassins stalking her bedroom, but to both our misfortunes, she was practically nude.
I swiftly covered my eyes respecting her privacy, at the same time she gave a yelp of suprise.
"Jarun!" She squeaked, keeping her tone low, "Wh-What are you doing here!?"
I caught eye of her reaching for the bedsheets, realizing it was safe to look, I uncovered my eyes. I was red with embarrasment.
"I was coming back for you, I was worried. Didn't you hear..." I managed.
"Yeah, stupid! Why do you think I''m up already!" She crouched down still trying to keep her body from sight, "I'm sorry, just next time knock first."
I was about to make a comeback when I heard footsteps approaching in the hall. Thankfully, Celestine listened to me when I told her to plan an escape route before-hand. I grabbed the remainder of her clothes as she snatched up her backpack, and made way through the tunnel.
When we reached the roof I realized she was still exposed, so I tossed her clothes, and sprinted to the roof door. I checked the lock to see if it were still intact and locked, it was.
"Looks good, Eli!" I exclaimed.
Eli was a nickname I gave her when we became friends, she hated it, but in a good way.
"Shutup." She retaliated, with a glance.
When I reached her she was calculating the chances of survival for jumping. We were a good 3 or 4 stories up, one slip would cost us our lives.
"Doesn't look promising." Celestine stated, "We would probably have better chances going down through the boardwalks, you know, building-to-building. It would be slower, but..."
The door started shaking and banging, they had found us.
"I don't think we have the time to go down the safe way. We have to go now!" I said, taking hold of her hand.
"On three..."
"One..."
"Two..."
"Three!"
We screamed as we plummeted! That's when I hit the window of the building, and everything went dark.
