Gulping I watched as the man looked behind me, he looked upset for a moment as he then lowered his weapon from my face. Turning around to see who may have been talking to him, I see Jasper walk up to me. Well who would have thought he was still around here, I thought he told us he had urgent news to give?
"She is not a red coat, she can knock the out cold, but I can guarantee you at least for the moment she is on our side." Jasper smiled as he walked to me.
"Do you greet all your allies with a knife to their face?" I question as he narrows his eyes at the other man.
"Forgive Jim, the war has made him forget his manners. What are you doing out here?"
"You two are about as quiet as a drunk running through the town." I sigh as I look between the both. "And what do you mean that my sisters or I maybe useful to get into the red coats. I fail to see how we could do that."
"Marry one of em, they go after our women now because theirs are too far away." Jim scoffs as he looks at me.
"Marry that selfish pig?! I would rather hang then ever do that."
"Abigail, the information one of you could get for even being his lover would be beyond valuable. You would be able to help out your fellow man." Jasper says just as we hear a man call out my name.
"That's my uncle, you two get lost and don't come back until you see on lit candle on the porch." I tell him as I quickly grab the wash box and walk back to the house.
"What were you doing?" the captain asks as I walk inside.
"I went to wash the dishes; however, it is far too dark to do such a deed. I must wait until the morning." I answer somewhat honestly as I set the wash box down only to stand up and be face to face with him. "Where are my sisters and uncle?"
"They went to help your uncle bring in the animals for the night to the barn. Tell me Abigail, why are you still unmarried?" the captain asks as he sits down and takes and apple from the center of the table.
This man was fishing for information, that was easy to tell but how could I persuade him to go after Crissy instead of insisting to talk to me? Taking a good look at the man, I could see he was dirty blond as well and his hair was pulled back into a looser ponytail than the one Jasper had. Though on the side I could see he had a strand of hair that was braided, usually that was a native American trait, sometimes even a marriage bond as well. Knowing this and how most of the red coats loved to talk about themselves I came up with a plan.
"Why ask so many questions about me Captain, judging from the braid in your hair it might appear to those who know that braid that you are married as well?" I question, and he looks up at me with a clever grin.
"Different braid my dear, this braid is one I give to my wife before I die. If I meet her before then." He says taking a bite of the apple.
That was a braid I had never heard of, but he still looked at me wanting to know what I was unmarried.
"My sisters are far more attractive than myself, I believe they both will marry far before me. I have no interest in marriage or men now. I have many other thoughts that occupy my mind." I answer honestly as I walk to the fire and poke it with the poker to keep the flames going.
I could sense him watching me, it did make me nervous but if I had to hit him over the head with a fire poker to keep him away from me then I would. Turning his chair to face the fireplace I could hear him take another bite of the apple.
"Your uncle knows to marry you off first, you are the eldest and that is the way it is to happen." He comments which makes me turn around and look at him confused.
"Captain, I am sure there are many other women who could entertain you with their time and company. Please do not include me as one of them." I say bravely as I stand up just in time for Uncle and Hannah to walk inside.
"You have a good night Mason, I feel we will see one another very soon." The captain said as he stood from his seat, put on his hat, gave a small bow, and then took his leave.
Shutting the door behind him, uncle goes to the fire and begins to talk to himself. Looking behind Hannah I don't see Crissy and go to ask her why, but she stops me by holding up her hand.
"To quote Crissy, I will get him in the sack one way or another." Hannah said with a shrug.
That will not end well, something told me the Captain may not want Crissy as badly as she thought.
"Where is she planning on ambushing him?" I question as Hannah turns around and point to the barn.
Running past, her, I knew what kind of person the captain was. He got what he wanted no matter who he had to use to get it. Crissy isn't thinking clearly, and I knew that I had to get to them before anything would happen hopefully. Grabbing the skirt of my dress I ran as fast as I could. Getting to the barn I looked in through the window and Crissy was with someone but from what I could tell it wasn't the captain.
"Oh General!" Crissy called out and I rolled my eyes again.
It didn't matter who it was to Crissy if she could play them whenever she wanted. Turning to go back to the house I am once again face to face with the captain. This just keeps getting better and better. Looking past me and into the barn, I could see his eye brow raise again.
"Loyalty my dear Abigail is what true gentlemen look for, I doubt any would find it with your youngest sister." He says as he looks down at me.
"True gentlemen? I fear I have never met one of them, so I would not know of what you speak. If you will excuse me, I have chores to do." I tell him and surprisingly he lets me walk right past him.
"Sleep tight Abigail. You will need all the rest you can get to see through the enemies' disguise." The captain said before he took off walking as well.
Something about those words got under my skin. Once back inside my uncle's house, I found Uncle Mason fast asleep in front of the fireplace with a book over his chest. Closing the book and covering him with a blanket I made sure he was far enough from the fire that the blanket wouldn't catch fire. Sitting the book down, I walk to the spare bedroom I shared with Crissy and Hannah.
"That Captain is going to be a problem." Hannah said as she brushed her hair in front of the vanity.
"He caught Crissy in the barn with another, gave me a whole story about loyalty. I think I can say honestly, he won't go for her now. "I sigh as I begin to undo the back strings on my dress.
"Well he was certainly watching you with a trained eye." Hannah said as she looked back at me. "You may have to be the one to do the dirty deed to accomplish our mission."
"That is a horrid thought to think, we will figure out something." I sigh as I replace my dress and coreset with a night gown.
Standing from the vanity, Hannah had me sit there before her and began to brush my hair for me.
"Ab's tells me what he was talking to you about?"
"I swear Hannah, all he wanted to know was why I wasn't married. Gave him the standard excuse of how you two are more attractive than me but I don't think he believed me." I sigh as I investigate the mirror. "I am going to have to be the mole in this aren't I?"
"Just give him your attention, no one is telling you to marry him." Hannah says as she begins to braid my hair.
"Yet that is...I don't know but there is just something about him that makes my skin crawl in such a bad way."
"He's the enemy, of course that is perfectly normal. Now come on let's get some sleep." Hannah says as she ties the end of my braid.
Climbing into bed, we both kept warm he best we could in our separate beds and we had no idea when Crissy would return. It depended on how long the man could play with her. If he had a lot of energy, then we knew we wouldn't see her until morning then gather any information we could get out of her.
