The next morning, there was a loud knock on the door followed by a loud crash. Jumping from the bed, I ran to the door and quickly opened it to find a red coat holding a very cold Crissy before him and he didn't look happy about it. Dang it Crissy!
"Does she belong to you?" the man questioned as he pushed her into my arms.
"Yes, forgive her, she sleeps walks." I lie trying to make up an excuse from her.
"Miss, she was hardly sleep walking, three of my men were with her and I shall no describe the details to such a fragile woman as you." The man says as he walks past me probably to find my uncle.
"Low profile Crissy, what part of that do you not understand?!" I whisper yell at her as she flinches at me.
"I lost track of time...and friends..."She smiled as me.
Hannah grabbed Crissy and pulled her up the stairs. Shaking my head, I turned back to shut the door to see another red coat looking at me with a smile on his face. Looking down I remember I am only in a night dress. Realizing this I turn and make a run up stairs to change. I could hear the man laugh as he came inside and shut the door behind him. Changing into a green dress and after having Crissy do all our hair because for some reason that was important, we walked into the dinning room to see Uncle and the two red coats stand for us.
"Colonel Brass, these are my three nieces. Abigail the eldest, Hannah the middle child and you already know Christine the youngest and apparently most adventurous." Uncle said as he narrowed his eyes at her.
"Yes, Captain Haltstaff gave us his report on you all. He finds you all quite agreeable, especially the eldest." Colonel Brass said as he looked at me for just a moment and then back to his plate. "Though to my eyes you are rather plain."
Normally I would knock a guy out for a remark like that. Holding that anger back I sat down and began to eat with my sisters. Trying my best to ignore the red coats who sat at the table with us. The second man whom later we found out was named Beacon didn't say much at all but stared at the three of us for equal amounts of time. One thing was for certain, they thought they owned us, but at the end of this war they would learn their true lesson.
"Well down to business, I have come to deliver this invitation to a ball for you and your nieces. There they can find good, gentlemen husbands." The colonel smiled as he stood followed by the other man. "Tomorrow at seven. See you then."
Then they took their leave. A ball? Why would they have a ball? Uncle opened the invitation and looked down and laughed.
"It's a match making ball, to make sure the men can be entertained while here." Uncle scoffed and threw the paper on the table.
"I've never heard of one of those." Crissy said as she looked at the paper.
"This is the first of the kind, all of you girls must be on your guard." Uncle says and then walks out of the room.
Resting in our chairs we all tried to come up with an idea.
"Well at least now I can get my hands on the captain." Crissy said as she stood.
"He doesn't want you, especially since he and Ab's caught you in the barn with another man." Hannah said as she stood up. "You just can't do anything but screw things up can your Crissy? Now Abigail will have to well you know with him."
Well just that thought made me gag. I didn't understand what was going on here, why the red coats seem to think they had all the power behind them, that there was no way that they were going to win the war. Just as I was thinking that Uncle runs back into the room almost out of breath.
"What is it uncle?" I question as I move to his side.
"Jasper...they found out about him and now they want to hang him." Uncle says trying to regain his breath.
Hannah looked over to me wide eyed and I shook my head, we had to help him.
"They don't know where he is though, do they?" I question to which uncle shakes his head.
"Uncle come rest with us, you need to calm down." Hannah says taking uncles arm and leading him from the room.
"Well what now?" Crissy asks me.
"I'll find him, you distract the red coats as long as you can." I tell her as I quickly leave the house.
Going deep into the woods I try to find a place where he might be hiding. After all I did tell him to leave until there was a candle lit on the porch. Looking to my watch I decide to do something drastic.
"Fred...I need you to locate someone." I call into the watch.
"Abs...all right make it quick and who is it?" Fred answers as I smile.
Quickly giving him Jasper's name and description. A green dot appears on my watch and I can't help but grin. Putting my full palm on the watch, I disappear from my spot and appear a few yards away from Jasper who is talking to other blue coats. Dusting myself off I walk up to Jasper and tap his shoulder.
"How in the world did you get here?" Jasper questions as he looks at me completely confused.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you. I have distressing news from my uncle, they know about you and they are now hunting you out. They want to hang you." I tell Jasper who with the flick of his wrist the men around his disperse.
Fear and terror were the two main emotions I could see in his eyes and no one would blame him for either. Taking my hand he led me away from the makeshift camp and to the river. I was hoping that he wouldn't drown me or anything like that but he just sat down at the riverbed.
"That shall be how I die? By hanging?" he questions me as he skips a rock along the water.
"No, Jasper you need to hide. At least until they find someone else to have on their man hunt." I tell him as I sit down beside him. "You must be braver and smarter than they are."
"How? They have inside men and women, we don-" he starts but I cover his hand with my mouth.
"Fine, I'll do what I can, but I am telling you, that Captain gives me a bad feeling." I say quickly then rub my arms. "There is a ball tomorrow night, I will return his attention but only if he gives attention first. I am not like my sister."
After lots of planning on any new places he could hide out along with his men. Finally, they decided on a place, but I left before they could tell me. Going through the small town, we of course had to stop at a dress shop where Crissy insisted that uncle buy us all new gowns for tomorrow's ball. He agreed before neither Hannah or myself could say anything to stop him.
Being measured for the dress and making sure they had a dress for us in stock was easy. Being gawked at by every soldier who happened to pass the shop window was what began to make me feel self-conscious. Finally, we were given dresses to try on. First Crissy modeled her light blue dress that fit her quite well. Next was Hannah in a dark purple color which she was quite happy with. Finally, was me, I was in a long green dress and I liked it. That was odd for me since I wasn't a fan of dresses. The green color complimented my red hair. Turning around I showed my uncle who smiled brightly at me.
"You could catch any man you wanted Abigail, your looks are far better than you assume." Uncle Mason tells me as he gently walks past me to pay the dress keeper.
After wrapping up the dresses, Crissy wanted to go on a walk about town. Probably to scope out other officers she hadn't been in the hay with yet. Still we got good information out of her whenever she was with...well anyone really. Walking in between my two sisters we looked about the town and could see red coats everywhere. Sighing and looking to the ground I begin to wonder if we bit off more than we could chew.
