It was cold, dark, and wet by the time we entered the camp. The camp was in the middle of nowhere, harder for the red coats to find. Very clever but I was surprised that Adam didn't get lost getting us here as well. The damp ground surrounding the camp had become more mess than help. They seemed to use the mud as a barrier trying to keep high water out. Looking up into the cold, wet rain that fell upon our heads I said a silent prayer in hopes that God would hear me and make sure that my team mates and my fake uncle were all right.
"Be mindful of the men here, most of them haven't seen a well to do woman as yourself in a while." Adam warned me as he kept me close by him.
"That's not exactly something I wanted to hear." I whisper as we make our way to a tent.
Inside I see a well decorated colonial officer talking to a man about my age in regular clothing. Did that meant he man was a spy or perhaps he had heard some information that would be useful and decided to come to tell the colonial army?
"That is all Thomas, keep up the good work." The decorated officer said as he stood and patted the man, now known as Thomas, on the back and walked him to the exit of the tent.
"Colonel, Mason and two of his nieces have been taken in for questioning." Adam says as he walks up to the man. "I have brought back his only niece that wasn't taken in at the time."
"How did she manage to avoid them?" the man questions.
"She was busy helping me sir, she stitched and bandaged a wound. In that amount of time, Mason and the two others were taken in." Adam said truthfully.
All eyes were on me now. The colonel walked around me, almost as if he were measuring me up for something. Deep down I had a bad feeling of what they were going to do with me now, however I needed to save my uncle and my sisters. After clearing his throat, the colonel nodded.
"She will make a fine spy. Adam, you introduce her to Thomas and come up with a plan to meet with a Sgt. Wallace. He too is one of our spies and he should be able to get them in to save Mason and the other two women." He told us and then returned to his desk. "That is all."
Nodding Adam took my hand and we left the tent. Thomas was waiting outside; no doubt having heard everything that the colonel had just said. Rolling his eyes Adam went ahead and told him everything. Thomas listened and nodded agreeing with what the superior officer had told us.
"What of you Adam? You just going to leave her to me?" Thomas questioned in a joking matter.
"No, you are stuck with me as well." Adam replied quickly.
"Fine, I can say that she is a cousin to my kin as well and that you are...well I suppose you could be her betrothed no matter on the age difference. However, if the British already know her face it will be up to you Adam to save her family." Thomas said as he placed his hand under his chin in a thinking manner.
Looking up to Adam I was waiting for him to back out and say that he had better things to do than to help some random woman he just met. He didn't instead he crossed his arms and listened to the rest of Thomas's plan.
"Haltstaff, do any of you know that name?" I ask as both look at me confused.
"I've heard of him, he's a captain but I heard he went off on a mission undercover. Why do you ask?" Thomas asks as he watches me carefully.
"At a matchmaking ball he showed interest in me, he knew I was single and that Mason was my uncle. I am just saying this so nothing suspicious may happen to us." I admit to him honest.
"Well you aren't single anymore. We can say it was a birth betrothal you forgot about and Adam came to collect you." Thomas says with a shrug.
"A birth betrothal? I think I would be a little late then Thomas." Adam says with a sigh and shakes his head.
"Well, that's the story we are going with, you had to wait until she became of age and now she is. Ta da." Thomas sighs throwing his hands up in the air as if he were dismissing the matter completely. "Cut your hair too or at least tie it up."
Looking back to Adam I am unsure what to say to him. I had so many questions, yet I spoke not a word, at least for a moment until he looked back down at me with a raised eye brow.
"Are you well? You keep staring at me as though I have the mark of the devil." Adam scoffs as I follow him to wherever he is going.
"Why? You could just walk away and have no trouble at all, why do you help me?" I question him.
Hearing those questions Adam stops and turns around to face me just as the rain begins to slow.
"You stopped and saved me, like you said I could have died. This is something I can help you with, so I will. Besides, you are nice to have around, at least for now." He spoke true and then offered his hand to me. "Come on let's get you dry."
Inside the tent, in the middle of it was a fire. Sitting there and trying to keep myself warm was something I had been doing since Adam left to find some clothing for me to change into. My dress was completely soaked so here I was in my underdress wrapped up in a blanket sitting before the fire. Closing my eyes, I had time to reflect on everything that had happened so far. Adam being shot by someone and if I hadn't saved him, I might be the one being questioned or worse.
Hopefully Thomas's plan would work out and we would be able to save them. If not, I would have to go all future girl on them and when that has happened in the past, it didn't end pretty at all. Adam came back inside and blindly handed me a pile of clothing. He reminded me of a gentleman since he didn't want to see me in just my underclothes. Quickly sorting through the pile, I find an old pale blue dress and quickly put it on.
"Do I want to know where this came from?" I ask as Adam now looks at me.
"It was one of the men's wife's before she left him for a red coat." Adam shrugged.
Well that was a horrible thing to learn. I am wearing a traitor's garment. Great. Sitting back down at the fire it isn't long before Adam sits down beside me. He was only wearing his white under shirt and white pants he had changed into. No shoes on either of us.
"Do you think this will work?" I ask Adam trying to make conversation.
"Never heard of one of Thomas's plans failing. Try not to worry about it." He replied followed by a yawn.
"I meant do you believe they will believe who we claim to be?"
"Why not? I suppose I am a bit old for you but after making up a fake name and excuse then it could be understood."
"What of your real wife? If you have one that is."
"No, no wife. Never had the time to settle down, always traveling." Adam yawned again trying to keep his eyes open.
You and me both Adam.
