Embers POV
By the time I had reached my house, my father was sitting on the front porch waiting for me, anger burning in his eyes. "Get in, now!" He pointed and I trotted past him, but he stopped me just before I got to the door. "Where the hell have you been? More importantly, with whom? I can smell him on you and it's not one from this pack." He concluded. He waited for me to shift back into my human form so I could give him some answers, but I had no intention of doing that. "You're almost 18, you'll soon be able to attend the mating ceremony to find your mate, but I'll be damned if in the meantime you screw around with a low life pup that isn't worthy of the alphas daughter." He persisted. "Don't you dare fall in love, or worse, get yourself pregnant before then. Your rightful place is with an alpha, who with any luck, will be your mate. Don't screw it up!" He barked, running one of his hands through his blonde hair. I looked like him, even acted just like him at times, but I wasn't him. I wasn't going to pretend that he had never messed up. That he was perfect. I know his past. Yet he has the audacity to lecture me! Before I shifted back to my human form and had yet another shouting match with him, I opened the front door by jumping up at the handle pulling it down and nudged my way in. I didn't stop running till I had reached my room and then began to shift. There was so many things I wanted to say to him, but for now it could wait. One minute he wanted me to stay in our pack, next he wanted me to be with an Alpha. Not like I really had any choice was there.
I took a long hot shower and shoved on a pair of silk pyjamas my mother had brought me for Christmas. She stood in my doorway with her arms folded by the time I came back into the room. Her short, reddish brown pixie haircut and bright blue eyes made her look young for her age. She looked more like 30 than 37. She was tall too, 5.11, but compared to dads 6.3 she seemed small.
"So who is he?" She asked intrigued, raising one of her thin eyebrows.
"What does it matter?" I replied bluntly. I didn't see what it had to do with her. My mother loved juicy gossip but somehow I don't think she would approve of this.
"Young lady I am only interested in your wellbeing. I hope you're being safe." She emphasised on the word safe. "Besides, you know how much you father worries. If you could take over as alpha from him he would happily let you in a heartbeat, mate or no mate. But he just wants the best for you, we both do." She finished, now sitting next to me on my bed. I was really getting sick and tired of having the same conversations again and again.
"Look, whatever I'm doing is my business. I'm not about to run off with some guy and get pregnant like dads ex, okay! I'm not even in heat and if I was I would know better than to, you know, do that!" The anger was building inside me and I started to unleash all of it upon my mother. I know she was only trying to help in her own way, but damn they were really starting to piss me off! My mother looked at me with a 'who the hell do you think you are talking to in that tone' kind of look and I sighed.
"I just want to be left alone. I've not done anything wrong. I'm going to bed." I bounced up from the side of my bed and flipped open the covers and slid right in.
"Have you spoken to Zak lately?" She asked, patting the duvet down around me.
"No!" I yelled and turned to my side. Why were they both so sure that Zak was the best fit. I mean sure, it would mean I could stay within the pack. But at the cost of making that jerk the next alpha?! I growled into my pillow with frustration.
"He's smart and really good looking. You're pups would be the most adorable little things Ember. You wouldn't have to go off to that mating ceremony and you could stay here!" My mother sounded like she was pleading now. But they just didn't get it. Okay so Zak was a very good looking 17 year old and I guess he was pretty smart too, but I had never met more of a bigger, disgusting, perverted asshole in all my life. His father, James, my fathers Beta and second in command, was actually a half decent guy. How Zak ended up the way he is is one of the biggest mysteries I'll never solve. Or care to solve. Not to mention if I went along with that plan it means I would never end up meeting my one true mate. I wasn't a fan of the whole soulmate thing, but if I had to choose between my soulmate and Zak I'd chose my soulmate! I ignored my mother and eventually she said goodnight and left. Right now I'd rather just live alone with a bucket of junk food and Netflix. Let the supernatural world fend for itself.
