Ch. 23 Where Is the Love

Life, I found, kind of sucks sometimes.

No, correction, a lot of times.

I drifted through darkness, losing all track of all time. Of all feeling. Of all sight. I was just…emptiness. It was like a dreamless sleep.

Have you ever been knocked unconscious before? Or fainted? Or even been in a coma? Then I think you’ll know what I’m talking about. Time had no meaning in the blackness that I was trapped in. And only the real world lurking outside the murky darkness could bring me back.

Which is exactly what it did.

I can’t tell you when it happened. It could have been months or years drifting through the blackness before a shining bright light appeared. It blinded me for a moment, forcing me to avert my eyes for just a second. And then I began to move, moving faster than I ever had before in the darkness. My own body was catapulted forward towards the light. It quickly became bigger and bigger, sometimes nearly too bright for me to handle. Suddenly I entered the light.

And I woke up with a strangled gasp on the hospital bed. The true reality of the world slammed back into as an overwhelming amount of pain hit me. I gave a choked cough as a tremendous amount of pain hit my head, along with my leg. It was like I’d been stabbed with a million needles, the pain sometimes targeting excruciating points on my head.

I was in a hospital, that was for sure. I instantly recognized the slightly uncomfortable bed I was sitting on, along with a very thin blue gown. A window stood in the corner, tall and lean. Outside I could see dozens of cars parked out with a few palm trees set up around the parking lot. A heart monitor was posted beside me, along with an IV drip that was plugged into my arm. And then I looked down.

My left leg was completely wrapped in a cast. A heavy soreness emanated from there, along with an uncomfortable and faint pain. But the horrible agony of my head was what really took my attention. I reached up and touched my hair, finding that my whole entire head was bandaged heavily.

A nurse suddenly rushed in, her wide hips swaying frantically as she bustled to me. “You’re awake! How do you feel, honey?”

I stared at the nurse, who was closely inspecting my leg and my head. Her hand grazed the IV bag, making sure everything was secure and I was in no immediate need of care. When I didn’t answer, the nurse gave me a warm smile and raised her eyebrow.

                “Well?” she prompted kindly.

I blinked. “Oh…uh…I kind of feel like…well, I guess I feel like crap.”

The nurse gave a small, lighthearted laugh, and instantly I could tell she was trying hard to be cheerful for my sake. “Oh, well I guess that’s expected. You were in quite a nasty car crash.”

My heart suddenly threatened to explode and I sucked in a big breath. “What car crash?”

The nurse frowned slightly. “Honey, you don’t remember? You were with your friend, Ellie Seruso at the time of the crash. Ms. Seruso tells me that you two were headed to the airport to return back to your home.”
