Ch. 3 Then the Morning Comes

“I’m going to throw up.” I groaned, nauseous. Blood dripped to the floor, and I breathed carefully to try and not spill my breakfast over a guy.

“Don’t look at the blood.” Alex said. “Focus on my eyes.”

I nodded and looked into his vast ocean blue eyes, trying to concentrate on them and not the blood.

“Feel better?” Alex asked, leaning closer.

I blinked and nodded slowly as we limped along the hallway. “I think so. Just get me to the nurse quickly, please.”

He nodded and we hobbled along, navigating through the hallways and past classrooms. Finally we reached the office, where the nurse was located along a secluded part of the area. We entered the polished clean place, where the nurse was sitting at her desk.

“What’s wrong?” the nurse asked, looking up. She seemed to take in Alex and me, and a worried look crossed over her face. “Oh, dear, not again! Set her down on the bed, please.”

Alex gently deposited me on the cot that was kept in the nurse’s room, and I gracefully—all right, clumsily—collapsed onto it, closing my eyes.

“Eh…” I moaned softly, feeling the room spin around me. I felt the nurse take my hand, clean it up with her fancy pants cotton swabs and wound-cleaning solution, and patch it up with a bandaid.

“There you go. You can open your eyes now, darling. The blood is all gone!” the nurse told me triumphantly, and slowly I followed her instructions, sitting up and looking at my hand. There was no blood. The nausea slowly evaporated.

“Thanks, Mrs. Rebecca.” I told her, smiling. I turned to Alex, a bit reluctantly. “And, um, thanks for getting me here.” A thought suddenly struck me and I frowned at him. “Wait…how did you know I had a phobia of blood?”

“I didn’t.” Alex said, anxiety flashing in his eyes.

“Yes you did! I remember you! You told the teacher I had a phobia of blood! Only my mother, my doctor, and my closest friend Ellie know about my phobia. But you?” I narrowed my eyes at him. “How did you know?”

“Lucky guess,” Alex told me quickly. “I’ve got to get back to class. You stay here and rest. Bye!”

And then he ran out of the classroom before I could even react.

“I need you to tutor me!” I blurted outright as soon as I plopped down at Alex Sheppard’s table. He was sitting with the popular kids already (which wasn’t that surprising, really) and it was a bold move on my part to confront him about it at lunch. But hey, I really wanted to know how he knew about my phobia. I could see in his eyes that it wasn’t just a “lucky guess”.

Alex looked startled—and so did the popular kids. Jacob—the king of our grade—raked his eyes over me, and clearly knew straight away that I was a nerd. He probably thought that right now I was spreading my geek germs all over their glowing weird popularity.
