Ch. 2 Lean on Me                                 ~PICTURE: ALEX~

“I thought you said I could work alone, Mr. Bryce!” I said angrily. “Why must I have a partner now? I’ve been fine on my own!”

“But Alex is new. Just show him what to do. It won’t kill you to make a new friend.” Mr. Bryce told me briskly, and then retreated to the board to write down our instructions.

I sighed and turned to Alex Sheppard. “Can you get our lab sheet? I’ll go get the materials.”

He nodded and dived into the blob of kids as I walked to the other side of the room and picked up our lab materials. I reunited with Alex and put our desks together. Alex got out a pencil and quickly scribbled down his name and suddenly turned to me, looking a bit embarrassed. “Um, sorry, but could you tell me your name?”

“Keegan Leon.” I answered. Alex suddenly froze, and I frowned at his response. “If you don’t know how to spell my name, then give the pen to m—”

I suddenly stopped as Alex began to scribble my name quickly down on the sheet. I had to admit, I was a bit impressed. He had spelled my first and last name completely correct—not a single mistake. Usually everybody missed a letter, but not Alex. Interesting.

I raised an eyebrow, leaning in closer to inspect his face. My eyes narrowed.  “Do I know you?”

Alex frowned and shifted uncomfortably away from me. “No.”

I opened my mouth to argue that I recognized him from somewhere, but just didn’t know where. Then I stopped and thought about it. Maybe I was overreacting, so I said instead, “Never mind, then. Let’s get started…”

“No, no, no!  Put the numbers here, and change the four to a one. No, that four! Yes, yes, that one!” I said exasperatingly.

“I’m sorry, okay!” Alex yelled. “I’m new, so I don’t know what to do at all!”

The bell rung up ahead, and I was seething inside. The stupid boy was bloody stupid! I rolled my eyes and grabbed the worksheet, slipping it into a folder in my backpack. “I’ll finish the lab by myself, and you and I can both take the credit. Sound good?” Alex opened his mouth to reply when I cut him off. “Never mind. People like you are always glad that nerds like me have to do their work. See you around, partner.”

I walked out of the classroom without another word, stepping out of the halls to search for Ellie. When I didn’t see her, I decided to go to my next class without her.

“Wait!” I suddenly felt somebody grab my arm, and I turned around, startled. Alex stood behind me and said, “Why do you hide your face like that?”

“What?” I said stupidly, not quite comprehending that somebody was talking to me, let alone a boy.

“You don’t really need glasses, do you? And you seriously don’t need to put your hair up like that or wear those baggy clothes.” Alex blurted.
